NIO launches the NIO ES8 model in Norway and opens NIO House in Oslo, the first in Europe that open door officially today 1st October.

Since the announcement last May 6th 2021, NIO shared its plans to establish a fully-fledged ecosystem in Norway, including electric vehicles, premium services, charging and swapping infrastructure, digital experiences, lifestyle products and an ambition of building up a user community in the country.

Today, 147 days later, NIO Norway opens for orders of the large electric SUV NIO ES8, officially opens NIO House Oslo, reveals an ambition to set up a substantial Power Swap network and offer Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) to Norwegian users, and announces its authorised service partners in Norway.

Alexander Schwarz, CEO Nio Europe

Today marks a significant moment in the history of NIO. Today the very first European users have the opportunity to experience what it means to be part of the NIO community – says NIO Europe’s CEO Alexander Schwarz. Norway is our starting point of our journey in Europe and beyond. Our vision is clear: to provide our users with seamless and worry-free services as well as supreme and joyful user experiences. We will be their friend and partner on their personal journey to a brighter and more sustainable future. From our NIO Houses, such as the first one in Oslo, through to our battery swap stations, our worry-free Battery-as-a-Service subscription models and our convenient online services, being part of the NIO community will bring joy, friendship and meaningful interaction.

It has been a hectic 147 days, but we are delighted with the positive response we have received in Norway so far. Users, cooperation partners, authorities and media seem to acknowledge that we are attempting to build up a unique ecosystem and user enterprise here in Norway – says Marius Hayler, general manager of NIO Norway.

User Advisory Board

NIO’s User Advisory Board has been at the centre of NIO Norway’s planning and progress during the past few months. More than 650 Norwegians applied to become members of the User Advisory Board, and 200 was initially invited to join.

The members of the User Advisory Board have met with NIO and each other on numerous occasions, and they were the first to experience NIO ES8. The advice and suggestions from the User Advisory Board has helped shape NIO Norway’s operations, services and plans, which were announced at the press conference at NIO House Oslo today.

Premium services

Offering a premium car-owning experience is a key part of NIO’s ambitions in Norway. This includes offering NIO users a mobile service and car pickup-and-delivery service from day one.

NIO Norway’s first service and delivery centre is located at Ensjø in Oslo, which is Norway’s capital and largest city. NIO has also entered into agreements with authorised service partners in four other large cities: Kristiansand on the south coast of Norway, Stavanger and Bergen on the country’s west coast, and in Trondheim, central Norway. The authorised service partners, which all score highly on user satisfaction in their respective regions, will offer the same complete suite of services that NIO provides from its own service and delivery centre.

Power Swap

An important part of NIO users’ car-owning experience is the holistic charging and swapping system. The latter enables NIO vehicle’s batteries to be automatically swapped in three minutes. Norwegian national authorities have already approved the country’s first Power Swap station, which will be located in Lier, approximately 30 kilometres south of Oslo.

Today, NIO announces an ambition to set up 20 Power Swap stations in Norway by the end of 2022. The plan is to locate Power Swap stations in many of Norway’s main cities and along the busiest transport routes. All Power Swap stations are subject to regulatory approvals including planning and building permission from relevant local councils.

Offering battery swap is an efficient way of extending the battery lifetime and thereby the lifecycle of electric vehicles. The technology facilitates both sustainability and convenience for our users – says Marius Hayler.

Battery-as-a-Service

NIO will also offer Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) to Norwegian users who purchase an electric vehicle from NIO. NIO users who purchase a NIO ES8 Signature Edition 100 kWh together with a BaaS subscription will be able to benefit from six battery swaps including service fee per month with an additional cost from NOK 1,999 per month.

To begin with, at the first Power Swap station in Lier, NIO’s BaaS users will be able to swap between 100 kWh batteries, for example replace an empty battery with a fully charged one. In 2022, NIO aims to offer the opportunity to downgrade to a 75 kWh battery as part of its BaaS offering, with a 150 kWh battery being introduced in 2023.

NIO ES8

NIO’s large and smart electric flagship SUV, NIO ES8, is being launched for sale in Norway today.

The NIO ES8 Signature Edition is available for immediate delivery with a 100 kWh battery, equivalent to a WLTP range of up to 500 kilometres.

For delivery in July 2022, Norwegian users can now order both the NIO ES8 and NIO ES8 Signature Edition with a 75 kWh battery, equivalent to a WLTP range of up to 375 kilometres.

The NIO ES8 Signature Edition is an extremely well-equipped model that incorporates all of NIO’s technology features, including air suspension, the digital assistant NOMI 2.0, the advanced driving system NIO Pilot and wireless machine and software upgrades. The NIO ES8 was recently awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP.

Norwegian users can choose between six and seven seat configurations for the NIO ES8. The vehicle has a maximum luggage space of 1,901 litres and a luggage space of 871 litres with the third seat row folded down. NIO ES8 has 534 brake horsepower and does 0 – 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. It is 5,022 mm long, 2,268 mm wide and has a wheelbase of 3,010 mm.

Norwegians love large SUVs with plenty of space, four-wheel drive and a solid battery range. We believe NIO ES8 ticks all the boxes for Norwegian users, and we are also delighted that we can offer a competitive price for such a large electric vehicle – says Marius Hayler.
