Hong Kong. 9 Ottobre 2016. Renault e.dams ha aperto la terza stagione del Campionato FIA di Formula E in modo enfatico con Sébastien Buemi vincendo la sua settima gara in carriera in Formula E e Nico Prost che si è fatto strada in pista per finire quarto nella HKT Hong Kong ePrix. La squadra lascia Hong Kong con 37 punti nel campionato squadre, avvantaggiando ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport e Andretti Formula E con entrambi 18 punti.

Dalla quarta posizione in griglia, Sebastian ha guidato in modo misurato e sicuro di prendere una posizione in merito, ha ottenuto un’altra quando un rivale è rimasto aggrovigliato in un altro incidente e, infine, la prima posizione grazie alla strategia di pit stop. La vittoria significa che Séb inizia la difesa del suo Campionato piloti con 25 punti davanti  Lucas di Grassi con 18.

Se la gara di Seb è stata misurata, Nico Prost è stato completamente grintoso dall’inizio alla fine. Dalla P10 sulla griglia di partenza, un problema di selezione della modalità significava per Nico scendere posizioni nel giro iniziale e questo è stato aggravato dal contatto subito nella parte anteriore e posteriore. Quindi ha caricato nel modo corretto, Nico ha sorpassato i suoi rivali e ha lavorato fino alla fine per terminare la sua corsa appena fuori dal podio in quarta posizione.

Le qualifiche nel corso della giornata sono stati un momento ricco di eventi. Gli incidenti in Q1, Q2 e Q3 significava ritardare il programma previsto e quindi la cancellazione della Superpole, con il risultato netto del duo del team Renault e.dams della P4 per Seb e la P10 per Nico.

Renault e.dams, Sébastien e Nico saranno in azione per il secondo turno della terza stagione, il Marrakech ePrix in Marocco il 12 novembre.

# 9 Séb:

“Inizialmente ho pensato che avevamo fatto un errore quando abbiamo fatto il nostro pit stop in regime di safety car, ma come abbiamo visto, tutto ha funzionato alla perfezione. Sono contento del risultato di oggi, ma abbiamo certamente dovuto lottare per raggiungerla. Abbiamo visto in qualifica solo quanto duramente tutti hanno spinto e la gara non è stata facile per noi. Oggi mi sentivo molto più felice con la seconda vettura nella quale abbiamo fatto alcune modifiche al set-up, ma nel complesso questo è stato un weekend fantastico e un modo eccellente per iniziare la stagione”.

# 8 Nico:

“Non so esattamente cosa sia successo al primo giro, sono rimasto bloccato nel modo sbagliato e ho perso molti posti. Per fortuna ero di nuovo nella modalità corretta sul rettilineo così mi sono battuto come nell’inferno per riuscire a superare tutti finché ho potuto; ero davvero andando a cercare ogni varco possibile ed alla fine la nostra gara si è rivelata molto buona e abbiamo fatto una grande strategia, oggi è stato un risultato fantastico per il team quindi sono davvero felice per tutti!”…

Vincent Gaillardot, Renault Operations Director:

“Il nostro fine settimana è finito molto meglio di quello che era iniziato quando abbiamo avuto un problema su una delle auto di Nico allo shakedown. Sapevamo dalle prove libere di oggi di avere un buon potenziale, tuttavia la qualifica è stata più difficile del previsto. La nostra prestazione in gara è stata coerente, abbiamo avuto una buona strategia ed entrambi i piloti hanno guidato bene. Séb è stato in grado di prendere l’iniziativa attraverso una combinazione di fattori, ma soprattutto grazie a un pilota forte e sensibile, con una strategia efficace. Nico ha avuto un problema di gestione dell’interruttore alla partenza, ma è stato in grado a recuperare bene. Tutto quello che abbiamo visto a Hong Kong è promettente per la stagione.”

Abbiamo visto che la qualifica è stata molto stretta questa mattina, ma la qualità dei nostri piloti e la nostra forte strategia ha giocato bene. “Che modo fantastico per iniziare la stagione! La prima volta a Hong Kong ePrix certamente sembrava spettacolare e abbiamo visto una concorrenza molto agguerrita. Sono particolarmente orgoglioso di come la squadra ha lavorato in modo forte e misurato durante l’intero evento. Entrambi piloti hanno guidato molto bene e la strategia ha funzionato bene. Le qualifiche non sono state buone come volevamo, ma in gara, tutti hanno dato esattamente ciò che era necessario. Séb ha fatto una gara molto matura ed efficace, mentre Nico ha mostrato grande aggressività per recuperare di nuovo l’ordine dopo i problemi al primo giro. Siamo tutti molto impaziente di Marrakesh”.

Renault e.dams win Hong Kong ePrix

From fourth on the grid, Sébastian drove in a measured and assured fashion to take one position on merit, another thanks to a rival getting tangled up in another’s incident and finally P1 thanks to pit stop strategy. The win means Séb starts his Drivers’ Championship defence with 25 points to Lucas di Grassi’s 18.
If Séb’s race was measured, then Nico Prost’s was fully feisty from start to finish. From P10 on the grid, a mode selection issue meant Nico dropped positions on the initial lap and this was compounded by contact front and rear as the field compressed. On a charge and in the correct mode, Nico blasted past his rivals and worked up the order ending his race just shy of the podium in fourth.
Qualifying earlier in the day had been an eventful affair. Incidents in Q1, Q2 and Q3 meant delayed running and cancellation of Superpole, the net result for the Renault e.dams duo was P4 for Séb, P10 for Nico.
Renault e.dams, Sébastien and Nico will next be seen in action for the second round of season three, the Marrakesh ePrix in Morocco on November 12.

#9 Séb:

“Initially I thought we’d made a mistake when we made our pit stop under the safety car, but as we saw it all worked out perfectly. I’m happy with today’s result but we certainly had to fight for it. We saw in qualifying just how hard everyone was pushing and the race was not easy for us. I felt a lot happier with the second car today as we made some set-up changes but overall this has been a great weekend and a superb way to start the season.”

#8 Nico:

“I don’t know exactly what happened on the first lap as I got stuck in the wrong mode and I lost a load of places. Fortunately I was back into the correct mode on the straight so I fought like hell to overtake everyone I could; I was really going for every gap possible! In the end our race turned out really well and we had a great strategy. It was a fantastic result for the team today so I’m really happy for everyone.”

Vincent Gaillardot, Renault Operations Director:

“Our weekend finished a lot better than it started as we had an issue on one of Nico’s car in the shakedown. We knew from free practice today that we had good potential, however qualifying was more difficult than expected. Our race performance was consistent, we had a good strategy and both drivers drove well. Séb was able to take the lead through a combination of factors but mainly thanks to a strong and sensible drive with an effective strategy. Nico had a switch-management issue at the start but was able to recover well. Everything we’ve seen in Hong Kong is promising for the season.”

Qualifying might not have been as good as we wanted but in the race, everyone gave exactly what was required. Séb drove a very mature and effective race whilst Nico showed great aggression to work back up the order after issues on the first lap. We’re all very much looking forward to Marrakesh.”
