Londra, Gran Bretagna. 6 Ottobre 2015. Dopo un grande finale della scorsa stagione, con tre podi nelle ultime quattro gare, il vincitore del DHL Berlin ePrix Jerome D’Ambrosio è in attesa di replicare quel tipo di modulo a Pechino.

Abbiamo raggiunto il pilota Dragon Racing per avere i suoi pensieri in vista della seconda stagione di Formula E …

A seguito dei test pre-campionato a Donington Park, come ti senti per andare verso la prima gara della stagione a Pechino?

«Beh, abbiamo sicuramente voglia di iniziare l’anno nel modo in cui abbiamo finito l’anno scorso, ottenendo tre podi, tra cui una vittoria nelle ultime quattro gare! Penso che abbiamo avuto un gran finale di stagione lo scorso anno e guardando i test a Donington dovremmo essere in grado di combattere per i primi posti. Questo significa che dovremmo essere in grado di vincere la prima gara? Chi lo sa … è difficile da dire, ma io sono ansioso di tentare”.

Quali sono i vostri pensieri sulla pista di Pechino, il circuito più lungo dell’anno?

“Sarà una sfida in termini di gestione della batteria secondo quello che ho fatto nel simulatore. Non sarà semplice in termini di energia perché ora abbiamo più potenza disponibile in modalità gara. La pista è disposta attorno al Parco Olimpico con l’esclusiva pitlane ‘a forma di U’ intorno all’Emotion Club. Non è il circuito più eccitante in cui corriamo in termini del giro di pista, ma penso che sia una delle piste che offre opportunità di sorpasso”.

Pensi che ci sarà una differenza abbastanza grande di passo in termini di prestazioni di quest’anno e che vedremo una squadra spiccare tra le altre?

“Spero che le gare siano combatutte, che è stata una delle cose migliori della scorsa stagione. Chiaramente ci saranno più differenze e variabili. A Donington, a parte uno o due giri molto veloci in determinate condizioni, per il resto erano tutti molto vicini. Questo parlando puramente delle prestazioni, in termini di consumo energetico non molte persone hanno i numeri degli altri piloti … “

Quali sono le vostre opinioni sul nuovo formato Super Pole e il voto FanBoost in gara?

“Penso che la Super Pole sarà una sfida per i piloti senza molto tempo di stare in pista e senza molti giri a 200kW. Ma sarà molto interessante per lo spettacolo e questo è quello che vogliamo, non vogliamo che sia facile per noi. Vogliamo l’intrattenimento degli spettatori in pista e in TV. Potrebbe essere più difficile con il traffico e così via, ma è una buona aggiunta. Il voto in gara del FanBoost porterà il concetto ad un altro livello. Prima della partenza veniva usato per essere impostato in un certo modo, ora si dà ai tifosi la possibilità di votare quando la gara è iniziata – che è stupendo. Se fossi un tifoso, mi piacerebbe aspettare la gara per iniziare a votare. Vorrei vedere chi ha avuto un buon inizio o una brutta partenza, fortuna o sfortuna. Chi ha bisogno del FanBoost? Essere in grado di farlo dal vivo è bellissimo”.

D’Ambrosio: “We want to start the year like we ended the last”

After a strong end to last season with three podiums in the final four races, the DHL Berlin ePrix race winner Jerome D’Ambrosio is looking forward to replicating that sort of form in Beijing. We caught up with the Dragon Racing driver to get his thoughts ahead of the second season of Formula E…

Following pre-season testing at Donington Park, how do you feel heading to the first race of the season in Beijing?

“Well we definitely want to start the year the way we ended it last year, getting three podiums including a victory in the last four races! I think we had a great end to the season last year and looking at testing at Donington we should be able to fight at the front. Now, does that mean we should be in a position to win the first race? Who knows… it’s difficult to say but I’m look forward to it.”

What are your thoughts on the Beijing track, the longest circuit of the year?

“It’s going to be a challenge in terms of battery management from what I’ve done in the simulator already. It won’t be straight forward in terms of energy as we’ve got more power available in race mode. The track itself is a great layout around the Olympic Park and the unique ‘U-shaped’ pitlane round the EMOTION Club. It’s not the most exciting circuit we race on in terms of one lap alone on the track but I think it’s one of the tracks that offers opportunities to overtake.”

Do you think there will be quite a big step difference in performance this year and see one team pull away from the pack?

“I hope the races are going to be tight, that was one of the best things about last season. Clearly there are going to be more differences and variables. At Donington, apart from one or two very fast laps in certain conditions, the rest were very close. That’s talking about purely performance, in terms of energy consumption not many people have the numbers of the other guys…”

What are your opinions on the new Super Pole format and in-race FanBoost voting?

“I think Super Pole will be a challenge for the drivers without much track time and not many laps at 200kW. But it’s going to be great for the show and that’s what we want, we don’t want it to be made easy for us. We want entertainment for the spectators at the track and on TV. It might be trickier with traffic and so on but it’s a good addition. In-race FanBoost voting is just bringing the concept to another level. Before the start it used to be set in a certain way, now giving the fans the ability to vote when the race has started – that’s amazing. If I was a fan, I’d wait for the race to start to vote. You want to see who’s had a good start or bad start, good luck or bad luck. Who needs the FanBoost? Being able to do that live is great.”
