Lola Cars has announced the appointment of Peter McCool as its new Technical Director, joining the Lola team again after his job in the team between 2009 and 2012.
McCool will lead the team of engineers and designers to develop Lola’s broad-ranging motorsport capabilities.
After training as an aerospace engineer, McCool went on to hold senior design and engineering positions in Formula One at teams such as McLaren and Super Aguri. Having secured two Formula E Drivers’ and two Constructors’ Championships with Mercedes, McCool brings further championship-winning pedigree to the team and will play an integral role in Lola’s entry to Season 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship later this year.
McCool will also play a leading role in the team’s development of broader motorsport technologies. McCool’s prowess will be crucial as the team looks to expand its motorsport and technological capabilities in key areas such as hydrogen, electrification, and sustainable fuels and materials.
Former Technical Director, Mark Tatham, will remain with Lola as a Technical Consultant. Tatham is credited with building Lola’s technical team to date and has been instrumental in leading the company’s development of the Gen3 Evo Formula E manufacturer’s perimeter.
We’re hugely excited to welcome Peter to the team as our new Technical Director. Peter’s pedigree and expertise speaks for itself, and his familiarity with the Lola team will undoubtedly stand him in good stead to spearhead the technical development across our ongoing and future motorsport projects. Beyond his motorsport credentials, Peter’s experience in applied technologies provides a valuable synergy with our overarching business aims, as we continue to expand our technology and capabilities – said Lola Cars Chairman, Till Bechtolsheimer.
I also want to express my appreciation for Mark’s dedication to Lola over the past two years. He has been essential in re-establishing our technical capabilities and has done a remarkable job. I am thrilled that Mark will remain an integral part of Lola going forward as our Technical Consultant.
Peter McCool added:
I’m delighted to be joining the Lola Cars team as Technical Director and am looking forward to leading a team of extremely talented engineers, designers and mechanics. Together we will maximise the potential of this iconic British constructor as we return to the top-tier of motor racing, while also developing cutting-edge technologies that will re-establish Lola as a leader in sustainable engineering and motorsport.
Mark Tatham continued:
It has been a privilege to lead Lola’s technical development over the past two years and contribute to this renowned brand’s return to the top-tier of motorsport. With his extensive knowledge and experience, Peter is the ideal person to hand over the baton to and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to push the boundaries in sustainable technology.
Lola’s return to top-tier motorsport will commence with its entry into this year’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, while the team will continue to collaborate with its partners to develop innovative technologies in both the motorsport and broader zero-emission spaces.
