Now let’s think “out loud” according to logic, but as we know, logic in the racing world sometimes just doesn’t exist.
And the premise is that this time, the Orecchio Lungo at Electric Motor News hasn’t spoken to us about this, but it’s simply our reasoning.
There’s been talk for some time of the giant BYD’s intentions to enter Formula 1. It’s quite logical that a company of that size would consider a World Championship with significant global visibility, just as it’s logical that it would talk to various motorsport categories if it were interested in linking its name to competitions.
The Orecchio Lungo reported that there are also discussions between BYD and the WEC, which would obviously be happy to welcome the Chinese giant into its ranks.
As we know, BYD is the world’s leading electric car manufacturer, and logical reasoning would dictate that Formula E should consider direct involvement. Strangely, news of “chats” with Formula 1 and the WEC has leaked, but no news about any approach to Formula E.
The first question is whether BYD is truly not interested in Formula E, or whether this news is being leaked ad hoc to divert attention while they work in the undergrowth.
Obviously, the investment in Formula 1 is much greater, but so is the visibility, and with the current Formula 1 regulations requiring significant work on the hybrid powertrain, BYD could be interested in developing its systems, which equip some of the cars in its current range.
There’s no doubt that it would be a great coup for Formula E to have a giant like BYD among its teams, and we know for a fact that the management of the electric single-seater category frequently talks with many manufacturers, so BYD cannot be the exception.
And to end up in the realm of fantasy… if BYD decided to enter Formula E, it would be spoiled for choice: purchasing a license to form its own team, or supplying powertrains to some existing team… and one thinks of Penske losing DS Automobiles… although rumors point to a proprietary powertrain or an engine from Stellantis.
Only time will tell if we’re right…
