The closed-door tests at the Almeria Coast Circuit in the Tabernas Desert, Andalusia (Spain), didn’t stop the sound waves reaching Electric Motor News’s Long Ear.
The tests are taking place with five cars from the Jaguar, Lola, Nissan, Porsche, and Stellantis teams, listed in strict alphabetical order, and from what Electric Motor News’ Long Ear heard, everything is running smoothly.
Of the cars present, only the Lola and Nissan are already “branded,” while the other three are black, with a small reference to the team on the side panels.
Concerning the current Formula E drivers, our Long Ear learned that Norman Nato was present for a very short time, while Lola worked with its driver Zane Maloney.
During testing, Stellantis encountered problems with the setup and requested additional time from the FIA to run the car. After 40 minutes of extra laps, they managed to resolve the issue.
L’Orecchio Lungo also learned that Bridgestone requested all telemetry data from the FIA for the tires, a request granted.
The Japanese tire manufacturer is present with 18 people and top-notch technical equipment, including a constantly rotating three wheel scooter that scans the entire track and various devices that allow them to understand the asphalt surface in specific areas.
The Aosta-based company Podium has brought many young people who are currently training, so as to be ready for the first Gen4 Formula E race in next year’s Season 13.
There are three people working on the project from Magneti Marelli, four from ABB, and even four people from Fortescue (formerly Williams Advanced Technologies) to provide support.
Electric Motor News’s Long Ear has heard that after these tests, Bridgestone will have all the necessary paperwork to begin production of the tires. Remember, they will still be treaded (not slicks), but there will be dry-weather tires (with a slight tread) and wet-weather tires (with a deeper tread).
Finally, our Long Ear has also heard that Spark has requested a further test, which should be conducted in France, most likely at the Pôle Mécanique Alès Cévennes, not far from Montpellier, before the official press presentation, which is expected to take place at Paul Ricard in April.
