Formula E reaches out to Red Hook community

New York, USA. 24th July, 2017. Formula E prides itself on being more than just an all-electric motor race and as a street racing series, it is always looking at ways to engage the local community.

Last time out in New York the many local activities that took place included a partnership with the Red Hook Initiative. This is a non-profit organisation that nurtures young people in Red Hook with support and skills to become co-creators of their lives, community and society.

To help with its aims of empowering the local youth to build the community, Formula E invited a group of 12 young people from the programme to experience the race. This included a tour of the garages, pitlane and an educational talk with the PortSide and the Earth Day Initiative.

But the partnership will not end there and there are plans for a year-long programme, educating the kids on electric car technology and its impact on air quality.

Carlos Menchaca, Council member for the 38th District of the New York City Council, said:

“The success of large events at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal should be measured by their impact on the surrounding Red Hook community. This summer, Formula E auto races were an opportunity to support area businesses and inspire youth. I salute Formula E for proposing year-round local education programs that will foster careers in engineering and green technologies. I look forward to working with Formula E, service organizations and community advocates to empower Red Hook’s young leaders who are already focused on innovation and resilience.”
