The Formula E Gen3 battery is born from the tender issued by FIA on december 16 2019 and it is made by Williams Advanced Engineering.
The battery has a gross capacity of 47 kWh and is able to accept charge up to 600kW both from the powertrain during regen or a fast charging ( Attack charge).
Traction motor is limited to 350 kW but since the battery can accept bigger power also the output can be much higher than the regulation limit.
The usable capacity is limited by regulation (Article 7.5 of technical regulation) to 38.5 kWh.
The battery is housed inside the car safety frame behind the driver and is bolted to the frame in the bottom creating a complitly enclosed space just for the battery.
In case of need the frame have 2 top holes for flooding the battery to stop the thermal runaway, the flooding channel brings the flooding liquid directly in contact with the cell.
Cooling is a standard liquid cooling like Gen1 and Gen2
The battery is also equipped with an inulation monitoring device for detecting insulation fault, this system is so sensible that some team experienced few false triggering due some condensation inside the battery in cold weather test, the battery still in Revision A so all the minor issue like this will be fixed before the first race.
