Race 2 of the London E-Prixwas ahigh-tension affair, featuring ahard-fought title win for Wehrleinand a maidenFormula E victory for Barnard.
This marksthe final outcome of the Formula E season, which – as usual –kept excitement levels high right up to the closing laps.
Rounding out the championship results, the Teams’ title went to Jaguar TCS, while theManufacturers’ title was claimed by Porsche.
Jake Dennis appeared to be out of contention after a poor qualifying sessionon a circuit where overtaking is difficult, even with Attack Mode; however,he found a valuable ally in Antonio Felix da Costa.Da Costa managed to hold off Pascal Wehrlein for several laps– even when the German had the extra power of Attack Mode– creating atense atmospherethat is sureto carry over into future seasons.
With the race nearing its conclusion, the championship lead swung back and forth, and the outcome remained completely uncertain.
After finally overtaking Da Costa as his Attack Mode expired,Wehrlein launched his bid for the title. The decisive moment came whenhe was side-by-side with Dennis as they approached the innocent Joel Eriksson; Wehrlein clipped Eriksson, sending him spinning into the wall and blocking Dennis with his own heavily damaged car.
Wehrlein managed to continue, finishing 14th, while Dennis’s race was over, forcing him to make a dejected return to the pits to retire.
As for the Teams’ Championship,Da Costa’s tenacious defensive driving and Mitch Evans’s fourth-place finish secured the title for Jaguar TCS.
With all the attention focused on the championship battle,Mahindra’s front-row lockout – featuring De Vries and Mortara in that order– was somewhat overshadowed;the pair ultimately finished second and third, securing a well-deservedthird place in the Constructors’ Championship.
However, they were denied the win by Taylor Barnard, who claimed his maiden victory at his home race, becoming the youngest driver to win in Formula E and delivering a huge boost to the DS Penske team on the day DS Automobiles bade farewell to the series.
Pascal Wehrlein, No. 94, Porsche Formula E Team said:
First of all, a big thank you to my whole team. What we did this weekend was outstanding again, delivered when we had to deliver, under pressure. You don’t crack under the pressure – we love the pressure, we embrace it, and we get even better with pressure, so that is fantastic. I not forget what happend today and how Antonio squeezed me during many laps… Tonight, we will celebrate and enjoy this moment, and also the next couple of days. I’ll be very happy then to go back to my family as they couldn’t be here this weekend, unfortunately, but my dad and my sister are here. I’m really looking forward to spending time with them, and then reset; work on the the Gen4 car and make it even harder for them next year.
Taylor Banard, No. 77, DS Penske, said:
That’s the first time I’ve cried for a long time! To be the youngest race winner feels amazing and to do it in front of the home crowd, it feels unbelievable. I’ve got my whole family here as well. I’m speechless right now, I can’t believe it.
It was definitely all or nothing moves. I did it in the last corner, both times, actually, in Attack Mode so, I think it was just opportunistic, and a tactical, FE move. Honestly, I’m lost for words.
That was the shakiest last lap I think I’m ever gonna have in my career. And after such a tough season, the team have done so much hard work, we’ve been working in the simulator tirelessly all year. It’s never really gone our way, but today, I think the whole team deserves a break, and honestly, thanks to all of them, the guys did absolutely amazing today.
