13 maggio 2017, Monaco: Mahindra Racing ha conquistato uno storico podio e un doppio posizionamento in gara all’ePrix di Monaco del campionato FIA Formula E 2017.

Nick Heidfeld ha condotto la sua M3Electro a un superbo terzo posto, seguito dal suo compagno Felix Rosenquvist in sesta posizione dopo 51 giri nel Principato monegasco. Il doppio posizionamento al traguardo è il migliore mai registrato da team nella storia dei tre anni di campionato.

Heidfeld è partito dall’ottava posizione subito dietro il teammate Rosenquvist e, con una tattica che sta diventando tipicamente sua, ha superato tre macchine in frenata alla prima curva.

Più tardi, al ventiduesimo giro, una zuffa tra Nelson Piquet Jr. e Jean-Éric Vergne è finita in lacrime quando Vergne si è fermato alla barriera del porto nella complessa parte del circuito della piscina. L’alterco ha fatto guadagnare a Heidfeld la terza posizione anticipando la safety car e cogliendo l’occasione per il cambio d’auto.

Rosenqvist è riuscito a tornare alla sesta posizione e a tenerla fino alla fine, nonostante un problema di trasmissione radio. Il team è intervenuto velocemente per segnalare allo Svedese dal box per dargli conferma della sua strategia di consumo a mezza gara.

Il podio di Heidfeld, proprio tre giorni dopo il suo quarantesimo compleanno, è il quarto che si aggiudica in altrettante serie sul circuito urbano di Monaco, dopo quello del 2005 in Formula Uno, quello del 1998 all’International Formula e quello del 1997 in Formula Tre.

Mahindra Racing si dirige a Parigi per il prossimo round del Campionato FIA di Formula E dove il team avrà solo pochi giorni per prepararsi a un’altra dura sfida sulle strade intorno a Les Invalides.

Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal del Team Mahindra Racing di Formula E ha commentato:

È fantastico essere tornati al terzo posto nel punteggio dei team con il risultato migliore ottenuto finora in Formula E. Un doppio posizionamento in gara è esattamente come intendevamo iniziare il nostro ritorno a risultati di rilievo, e non vediamo l’ora di proseguire questo slancio nella prossima settimana di Parigi.

Nick Heidfeld ha dichiarato:

Alla fine la giornata si è conclusa bene, per noi. Dopo il giro di qualifica mi sono posizionato al secondo posto, ma i gruppi successivi sono stati più veloci e ho dovuto iniziare in P8. È stato grandioso correre lungo la fascia esterna all’inizio e guadagnare tre posizioni, dal terzo all’ottavo posto, ma ho dovuto assicurarmi di non essere in posizione pericolosa per la seconda curva e ho dovuto incastrarmi e arretrare! Stavo correndo abbastanza al sicuro in quinta posizione, non molto distante dagli altri davanti a me, alla giusta distanza per non essere in coda a loro quando si sono toccati e trarne quindi un buon vantaggio. Ho potuto così portarmi in terza. Non riuscivo a tenere il ritmo dei piloti in testa, ma era bello vedere nello specchietto che le macchine dietro diventavano sempre più piccole. Non c’è un attimo per rilassarsi sulla pista di Monaco e ci sono sempre incidenti all’ultimo, ma è fantastico finire sul podio.

Felix Rosenqvist ha aggiunto:

Ripensando alla giornata, credo che abbiamo iniziato molto bene in FP1 e abbiamo dimostrato che siamo tra I più veloci. Ho avuto uno scontro alla fine di quella sessione dopo un fraintendimento tra i marshal e i piloti, che mi ha messo in posizione difensiva per il resto della giornata. La corsa è andata bene, ma i problemi che si sono presentati sono stati tutti fuori dal nostro controllo. All’inizio, il mio piano era di rimanere all’interno e tutti sono andati sulla fascia esterna, convinti che all’interno non avrebbe funzionato! Dopo la sosta al recinto, ho perso il collegamento radio e non potevo parlare con il team, così abbiamo dovuto comunicare dal recinto, e alla fine ha funzionato abbastanza bene. Tenuto conto di questo, sono abbastanza felice di aver chiuso la gara in sesta posizione e sono molto contento che il team abbia raggiunto il podio. È il posto in cui vogliamo stare e Nick oggi ha dimostrato che è dove entrambi dobbiamo salire e non sarò soddisfatto finché non ci sarò salito anch’io.

Historical podium and Formula E points haul for Mahindra Racing in Monaco

• Mahindra Racing celebrates a superb third place and top six double-points finish.

• Heidfeld becomes first driver to finish on the podium in Formula E and Formula One in Monaco.

13 May 2017, Monaco: Mahindra Racing took a historical podium and double-points finish at the 2017 FIA Formula E Monaco ePrix today.

Nick Heidfeld steered his M3Electro to a superb third place, followed by his teammate Felix Rosenqvist in sixth after 51 laps in the Monagasque principality. The double-points finish is the best ever recorded by the team in the fully electric championship’s three-year history.

Heidfeld started from eighth on the grid directly behind teammate Rosenqvist and, in what is becoming a signature move, overtook three cars under braking into the first corner.

A tussle between competitors Nelson Piquet Jr. and Jean-Éric Vergne later on lap 22 ended in tears when Vergne stopped on the harbourside barrier in the swimming pool complex section of the track. The altercation promoted a well-placed Heidfeld to third and forced a safety car during the optimum car swap period.

Rosenqvist was able to move back into sixth position and held onto the strong points-scoring place despite a one-sided radio issue. The team reacted quickly to signal the Swede from pit wall to confirm his energy strategy mid-race.

Heidfeld’s podium, just three days after the German celebrated his 40^th birthday, is his fourth in as many series on Monaco street circuits after Formula One in 2005, International Formula 3000 in 1998 and Formula Three in 1997.

Mahindra Racing heads straight to Paris for the next round of the FIA Formula E Championship where the team has just a few days to prepare for another tough challenge on the French cobbled streets around Les Invalides.

It’s great to finally be back where we belong in third place in the teams’ standings after our best ever result in Formula E. A double-points finish is exactly how we wanted to start our comeback of consisitently strong results, and we can’t wait to use the momentum in Paris next week.

Nick Heidfeld said,

The day finished well for us eventually. After my qualifying lap I was second, but the next groups were quicker and I had to start from P8. It was awesome to go around on the outside at the start and gain three places from eighth place, but I had to make sure I wasn’t in a dangerous position for turn two and slot back in! I was running quite safely in fifth place with not too big a gap to the guys in front, meaning I wasn’t tailing them when they made contact and benefited nicely. This promoted me to third, and while I couldn’t hold the pace of the leaders it ws nice to see the cars in my wing mirrors getting smaller. You can never relax around Monaco and there are always a few late incidents but it’s great to finish on the podium.

Felix Rosenqvist said,

Looking back at the day I think we started off very good in FP1 and showed we are one of the quickest around here. I had a crash at the end of that session after a misunderstanding with the marshals and drivers, which put me on the back foot for the rest of the day. The race was good, but all the wrong things happened which was out of our hands. At the start, my plan was to be on the inside then everyone went on the outside, which no one thought would work but it did! After my pit stop I lost my radio in the second stint and couldn’t talk to the team, so we had to communicate through the pit board, which worked quite well in the end.  Considering this, I’m quite happy finishing P6 and I’m really happy the team has scored a podium. It’s where we want to be and Nick showed today it’s where we should be and I’m not happy until I am on the podium.
