Città del Messico, Messico. 1° Aprile 2017.

Mexico City, Mexico. 1st April 2017. Round 4 of the 2016/2017 FIA Formula E Championship at Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez saw victory go to Lucas di Grassi (Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler). The Brazilian was joined on Saturday’s podium by Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne (Techeetah) and Briton Sam Bird (DS-Virgin Racing).

As expected, the race took placed in hot sunshine, with high temperatures for the time of year, since Michelin’s technicians recorded 27°C and 47°C for the ambient and track temperatures respectively when the clash kicked off at 4pm local time.

The circuit is rarely used and consequently quite dirty, while the day’s wind blew an additional coating of dust onto the surface. As a result, the drivers spent race day battling with changing grip levels, especially through the baseball stadium portion which is used only by Formula E, as well through the most exposed turns.

The 12-turn 2,092km configuration (five left-handers / 12 right-handers) used the complete oval section (Formula 1 uses only half of it), plus a tighter and twistier run through the baseball stadium grandstands. Like last year, the 40,000 available tickets were all sold out well ahead of race day.

“This year’s Mexico City ePrix certainly lived up to expectations in terms of the show it provided,” remarked Serge Grisin, manager of Michelin’s Formula E programme.

“The temperature fluctuations, the quantity of dust on the track and the grip differences due to the surface changes kept the drivers on their toes. Thankfully, we dialled all these situations into the design of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2 to make it as versatile as possible. We knew the championship would throw up a wide variety of conditions and difficulties such as drain covers and painted road markings, and we were also aware that some venues, like Mexico City’s permanent racetrack, would pose other challenges. The portion through the baseball stadium is a unique feature of the season. Today’s exciting race is further evidence that the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV2 allows the drivers to keep fighting to the very end!”
