Q: Come ti coinvolge il FIA Formula E Championship dal punto di vista del pilota?

Ho avuto una lunga carriera nelle corse (più di 20 anni!) E ho gareggiato in tanti diversi campionati. Ho corso in Formula 1 2007-2009 e nel corso degli ultimi cinque anni ho fatto di tutto, dalla NASCAR alle auto sportive ed al Rallycross. Quando ho sentito parlare di Formula E ho pensato che fosse un concetto davvero interessante e la tecnologia impiegata è il futuro. Sapevo che volevo essere coinvolto ed c’è stato un grande apprendimento nelle prime due stagioni, sempre di più sulla tecnologia elettrica. Sono ancora coinvolto in altre serie che sono più tradizionali – in questa stagione sto anche correndo nel Campionato del Mondo Endurance e correrò a Le Mans 24 Ore.

D: La prossima gara in calendario si svolge a Berlino: quale aspetto della manifestazione ti rende più impaziente?

Beh, io sono nato in Germania, a Heidelberg, quindi è uno di quei paesi dove ho un po ‘di storia! Berlino è una grande città e abbiamo avuto un risultato solido l’anno scorso, quindi è un posto nel quale non vedo l’ora di tornare. Il cambiamento di sede di quest’anno è interessante. L’anno scorso abbiamo corso all’aeroporto di Templehof ma quest’anno si sposta al centro della città, quindi è essenzialmente una nuova pista di gara per noi.

D: La gara si svolge in una nuova posizione centrale, quali sono i tuoi pensieri sul circuito? Quali sezioni pensi che saranno più difficili per fare una buona gara?

Penso che sarà davvero una corsa interessante proprio nel cuore di Berlino. Il concetto di Formula E è quello di portare le corsa alle persone nei centri urbani, e questo è sicuramente quello che faremo a Berlino quest’anno. Sarà interessante vedere i tornanti e sono sicuro che lavoreremo per mettere su un grande spettacolo per la Germania!

D: Il finale della seconda stagione di Formula E si avvicina rapidamente. Pensi che la percezione del pubblico nei confronti delle corse elettriche e delle auto elettriche sia cambiato da quando la serie ha cominciato?

Non siamo sicuramente ancora a questo livello, c’è ancora molto sviluppo che deve essere fatto, ma di sicuro è il futuro. Vediamo sempre più veicoli elettrici in fase di sviluppo ed è un segmento che tutte le case automobilistiche stanno esaminando. Credo che vedremo più persone interessate ai veicoli elettrici quando la tecnologia si svilupperà e migliorerà.

D: Abbiamo due gare a Berlino e Londra rimanenti in questa stagione: quale città ti piacerebbe vedere sul calendario di Formula E il prossimo anno?

So che Formula E ha parlato per aggiungere New York e sarebbe assolutamente incredibile correre sulle strade di quella città. E’ anche sorprendente che Parigi sia stata aggiunta in questa stagione. Correre vicino alla Torre Eiffel è stata davvero speciale!

D: Si prevedono più categorie di auto elettriche ed ibride nel motorsport in futuro?

Decisamente. Lo abbiamo visto già quando a Le Mans ed ai campionati endurance iniziato a usare le ibride e poi Formula E ha lanciato la prima serie elettrica al mondo. E’ il futuro, quindi sono sicuro che nel tempo diventerà sempre più popolare.

D: Parlaci del tracciato di Berlino e cosa ti aspetti di questa gara?

La pista di Formula E di quest’anno nel centro di Berlino si presenta come un grande circuito per correre, con una serie di tornanti e rettilinei, rendendo le frenate e le accelerazioni importanti. Ci sono anche un paio di curve di velocità elevate nella Strausberger Platz, che sembra essere l’area più impegnativo e la parte del circuito dove sono più impaziente di guidare.

D: Quale sarà la sfida più grande della manifestazione di Berlino?

La sfida più grande di Berlino sarà imparare come le nuove caratteristiche della pista influenzano le gomme ed il bilanciamento della vettura, in pratica, essere in grado di massimizzare il singolo giro di qualifica e di essere efficace con l’energia in gara.

Q: Hai gareggiato in Germania molte volte, come pensi che i fan tedeschi risponderanno alla Formula E?

Mi è sempre piaciuto correre in Germania, ci sono molti fan appassionati e competenti di motorsport quindi non vedo l’ora di fare una gara emozionante nel centro di Berlino per loro.

D: Quali erano i tuoi pensieri quando per la prima volta hai sentito parlare del FIA ​​ Formula E Championship?

I miei primi pensieri erano di interesse; che si trattava di un nuovo ed entusiasmante campionato mondiale FIA, una monoposto con un propulsore elettrico e il concetto di corse su strada nelle principali città del mondo. Tutti questi elementi combinati, più il livello dei piloti che hanno anche dimostrato il loro interesse, l’ha reso una serie della quale volevo essere parte fin dall’inizio.

D: Quanto successo pensi che la Formula E ha avuto finora nel cambiare la percezione delle auto elettriche e delle corse elettriche?

Credo che ciò che la Formula E ha raggiunto in un breve lasso di tempo è fenomenale. La serie è la prima serie del motorsport completamente elettrica e sta mostrando con successo che le corse di auto elettriche offrono gare emozionanti. Insieme con la tecnologia sviluppata attraverso la concorrenza tra i produttori di Formula E, continuerà a cambiare la percezione delle auto elettriche come opzione veloce ed efficiente per viaggiare intorno alle città.

Q: What is it about the FIA Formula E Championship that appeals to you as a driver?

I’ve had a long career in racing (over 20 years!) and I’ve competed in a lot of different championships. I raced in F1 from 2007 to 2009 and over the past five years have done everything from NASCAR to sportscars and rallycross. When I heard about Formula E I thought it was a really interesting concept and the technology involved is the future. I knew I wanted to be involved and it’s been a great first two seasons learning more and more about electric technology. I am still involved in other series that are more traditional – this season I am also competing in the World Endurance Championship and will race in the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Q: The next race on the calendar takes place in Berlin: what aspect of the event are you most looking forward to?

Well I was born in Germany, in Heidelberg, so it’s one of those countries that I have some history with! Berlin is a great city and we had a solid result there last year so it’s a place I’m looking forward to going back to. The change in venue this year is going to be interesting. Last year we raced at Templehof Airport but this year it will move to the city centre, so it is essentially a brand new race for us.

Q: The race takes place in a new central location, what are your thoughts on the circuit? Which sections do you think will be most challenging or make for good race viewing?

I think it’s going to be really interesting racing right in the heart of Berlin. The Formula E concept is to bring racing to the people in city centres, and that’s definitely what we will be doing in Berlin this year. The hairpin turns will be interesting to watch I’m sure and we’ll be working to put on a great show for Germany!

Q: The finale of Formula E’s second season is fast approaching. Do you think public perception towards electric racing and electric cars has changed since the series began?

We’re definitely not there yet, there is a lot of development that needs to happen, but for sure it is the future. We see more and more electric vehicles in development and it’s an area that all the car manufacturers are looking into. I think we will see more people turning to electric vehicles as the technology develops and improves.

Q: We have races in Berlin and London remaining this season: what cities would you like to see on next year’s Formula E calendar?

I know Formula E have spoken about trying to add New York at some point and that would be absolutely incredible racing through the streets there. It’s amazing that Paris was added for this season too. Racing nearby to the Eiffel Tower was pretty special!

Q: Do you foresee more electric and hybrid series making their way into motorsport in the future?

Definitely. We saw it already when Le Mans and endurance championships started bringing in hybrids and then Formula E launched the world’s first all-electric series. It is the future, so I’m sure in time it will become more and more popular.

Q: Talk us through the Berlin track layout and any sections you’re particularly looking forward to?

This year’s Formula E track in the centre of Berlin looks like a great circuit to race on, with a number of hairpins and straights, making braking and acceleration important. There are also a couple of high speed corners around the Strausberger Platz, which look to be the most challenging area and the part of the circuit I’m most looking forward to driving.

Q: What will be the biggest challenge of the Berlin event?

The biggest challenge with Berlin will be learning how the new track characteristics influence the tyres and car balance in practice, to be able to maximise the single qualifying lap and be efficient with the energy in the race.

Q: You’ve raced in Germany many times, how do you think the German race fans will respond to Formula E?

I have always enjoyed racing in Germany, there are many passionate and knowledgeable motorsport fans so I am looking forward to putting on an exciting race in the centre of Berlin for them.

Q: What were your thoughts when you first heard about the FIA Formula E Championship?

My first thoughts were of interest; that it was an exciting new FIA World Championship, a single seater with an electric powertrain, and the concept of street races in the major cities of the world. All these elements combined, plus the level of drivers also showing interest, made it a series that I wanted to be part of since the beginning.

Q: How successful do you feel Formula E has been so far in changing perceptions of electric cars and electric racing?

I believe what Formula E has achieved in a short space of time is phenomenal. The series is the first fully electric motorsport series and it is successfully showing that electric racing provides exciting races. Along with the technology developed through competition between the manufacturers in Formula E, it will continue to change the perception of electric cars as a fast and efficient option to travel around cities.
