Hans-Jürgen Abt: “prestazione straordinaria da parte del team e dei suoi partner”

Kempten, Germania. 6 Luglio 2016. Con dieci podi all’attivo, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport ha celebrato più podi di ogni altra squadra. Hans-Jürgen Abt trae la sua conclusione circa la seconda stagione di Formula E in questa intervista, racconta i suoi riflessi personali e offre una vista sul futuro della serie di corse elettriche.

La seconda stagione di Formula E è ormai storia. Cosa ne pensi?

“La Formula E si sta sviluppando rapidamente. La squadra intorno ad Alejandro Agag non riposa sugli allori, ma è in realtà l’introduzione di idee innovative quello che spinge la serie in avanti. Un buon esempio di questo è il nuovo calendario, che a mio parere è un highlight assoluto. Il percorso più facile non viene mai scelto, ma si cerca sempre la soluzione migliore insieme ai team ed ai partner. Siamo orgogliosi di essere una parte della famiglia della Formula E “.

Quanto è soddisfatto del secondo posto in entrambi i campionati piloti e squadre?

“Molto soddisfatto dopo aver avuto un paio di giorni tra la gara finale ed oggi per digerire tutto. Non dobbiamo dimenticare che la Formula E è sport competitivo al più alto livello internazionale. Per noi di ABT è competere contro produttori come Renault o Citroën DS. In questo campo, prendere i trofei e le vittorie e lottare per il titolo fino all’ultima gara è una straordinaria performance di tutta la squadra ed i suoi partner. Quando si ha il titolo alla portata di mano durante il fine settimana finale, è necessario fare un passo indietro per apprezzare appieno questo.”

L’ultima gara, in particolare, e la collisione tra Lucas di Grassi e Sébastien Buemi ha dato luogo a molte discussioni. La vostra valutazione?

“Una cosa è chiara: nessuno vuole una collisione tra due candidati al titolo al primo giro della gara decisiva – non noi, nemmeno la competizione e nemmeno i fan. In cima a questo c’è il fatto che Lucas è senza dubbio uno dei piloti più prudenti sulla griglia di partenza – altrimenti non sarebbe salito sul podio otto volte in questa stagione. E’ anche chiaro che egli ha dovuto prendere più rischi nell’ultima gara in modo da avere qualche possibilità contro Sébastien Buemi. E’ per questo spirito combattivo che è così altamente considerato da molti fan. Per questo motivo, c’era l’obiettivo di superare Nicolas Prost appena possibile. Purtroppo lo toccò nella manovra e poi è entrato in collisione con Buemi. La collisione è stata sfortunata, ma il campionato non è stato deciso da questo. Credo che tutti farebbero bene a congratularsi con Seb e Renault per aver vinto il titolo, e riconoscere ilo merito di Lucas per una delle sue stagioni più forti di sempre”.

Il terzo podio di Daniel Abt nella gara finale è stato un po’ inosservato in tutta la confusione. Come si fa a misurare il suo successo?

“Ovviamente, i suoi pensieri erano anche con Lucas e la lotta per il titolo, ma sono sicuro che ha comunque goduto la folla vivace sul Podio. Meritava lo champagne visto che ha fatto ancora un altro buon weekend.

Tre volte sul podio quest’anno, due secondi posti -. Spero per lui che la prima vittoria non sia troppo lontana a venire ”

Qual è stato il momento clou personale della stagione?

“La gara di Long Beach con la vittoria di Lucas e il terzo posto di Daniel. Era il nostro primo doppio podio in Formula E, ma la cosa ancora più importante era che si trattava di un ritorno perfetto dopo che Lucas è stato squalificato in Messico dopo che la squadra ha fatto un errore. Tutti erano sotto una pressione enorme e avevano forse segretamente rinunciato al titolo – e poi la squadra è ha trovato la Roulette russa prima di andare a prendere la seguente vittoria a Parigi tre settimane più tardi. Sono stati momenti molto emozionanti e speciali.”

Nella stagione 2014/2015 due terzi posti, ora due secondi – che cosa deve essere fatto in modo che il titolo possa essere vinto nella prossima stagione?

“Per fortuna la vittoria nelle corse non è prevedibile – in nessuna disciplina. Dobbiamo fare il nostro dovere in estate e questo inizia con lo sviluppo di una macchina vincente per Daniel e Lucas. Siamo attualmente al lavoro su questo insieme a Schaeffler e altri partner. La prossima settimana siamo in test nel Sud Europa. E poi per tutti – i piloti ed il team nella stessa misura – per non fare errori su ogni singolo weekend di gara. Mi aspetto una lotta ancora più vicina nel prossimo anno e anche più squadre che saranno in lotta per la vittoria delle gare e del titolo “.

Come funziona il programma del vostro team prima dell’inizio della stagione?

“Ottobre sembra ancora come se fosse molto lontano, ma i preparativi sono già in pieno svolgimento. Sono contento che abbiamo già spuntato alcuni punti importanti: la nostra ABT Schaeffler FE02 è stata omologata dalla FIA, i nostri piloti Daniel e Lucas sono confermati, i partner più importanti come Schaeffler sono ancora a bordo. Attualmente stiamo avendo alcune discussioni interessanti, in modo che penso che ci potrebbe essere una buona notizia da essere annunciata. I test iniziano presto, compresi i giorni ufficiali a Donington ed una piccola presentazione del nostro team nel mese di settembre – e siamo pronti ad andare in direzione di Hong Kong … ”

… Dove la nuova stagione inizia il 9 ottobre. Ti piace il calendario annunciato di recente?

“Penso che sia eccellente. Molti pensavano che Parigi o Berlino fossero imbattibili. E ora ci saremo davvero a gareggiare nella corsa finale per le strade di New York. Luoghi come Montreal o Marrakesh sono impressionanti, Berlino e Monaco saranno magnifiche come sempre. Non vediamo l’ora di iniziare il prossimo tour con la Formula E. ”

With ten podium finishes to its name, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport celebrated more podiums than any other team. Hans-Jürgen Abt draws his conclusion about the second Formula E season in this interview, recounts his personal highlights and offers a view on the future of the electric racing series.

The second Formula E season is now history. What’s your take?

“Formula E is developing rapidly. The team around Alejandro Agag is not resting on its laurels, but is in fact introducing innovative ideas to push the series forward. A good example of this is the new calendar, which in my opinion is an absolute highlight. The path of least resistance is never chosen, but rather the best solution is always sought together with the teams and partners. We are proud to be a part of the Formula E family.”

Just how satisfied are you with second place in both the drivers’ and teams’ classifications?

“Very satisfied after having had a few days between the finale and today to digest everything. We shouldn’t forget that Formula E is competitive sport at the highest international level. We compete as ABT against manufacturers like Renault or Citroën DS. In this field, to take trophies and wins and to fight for the title down the last race is an extraordinary performance by the entire team and its partners. When you have the title within grasp on the final weekend, you need to take a step back to fully appreciate this.”

The last race in particular and the collision between Lucas di Grassi and Sébastien Buemi gave rise to much discussion. Your assessment?

“One thing is clear: nobody wants a collision between two title candidates on the first lap of the decisive race – not us, or the competition and also the fans. On top of this comes the fact that Lucas is without doubt one of the most cautious drivers on the grid – otherwise he would not have mounted the podium eight times this season. It is also clear that he had to take more risks in the last race in order to have any chance against Sébastien Buemi. It is for this fighting spirit that he is so highly regarded by many fans. For this reason, it was the aim to overtake Nicolas Prost as soon as possible. Unfortunately he touched him in the process and then collided with Buemi. The collision was unfortunate, but the championship was not decided by this. I believe everyone would be well advised to congratulate Séb and Renault for winning the title, and acknowledge Lucas for one of his strongest seasons ever.”

Daniel Abts third podium at the finale went a little unnoticed in all the confusion. How do you gauge his achievement?

“Obviously, his thoughts were also with Lucas and the title battle, but I’m sure that he enjoyed the lively crowd on the Podium nevertheless. The champagne was richly deserved since he had yet another strong weekend. Three times on the podium this year, two second places – I hope for him that the first victory isn’t too long in coming.”

What was your personal highlight of the season?

“The race in Long Beach with Lucas’ win and Daniel’s third place. It was our first double podium in Formula E, but what was even more important was that it was a perfect comeback after Lucas was disqualified in Mexico after the team made a mistake. Everyone was under enormous pressure and had perhaps secretly given up on the title – and then the team came up trumps before going on to take the next victory in Paris three weeks later. These were moments that were very emotional and special.”

2014/2015 two thirds, now two seconds – what must be done so that the title can be won next season?

“Fortunately victory in racing is not predictable – in no discipline. We have to do our homework in the summer and this starts with developing a winning car for Daniel and Lucas. We are currently hard at work on this together with Schaeffler and other partners. Next week we are off testing again in Southern Europe. And then for everybody – drivers and team to the same extent – to make no mistakes on every single race weekend. I expect an even closer fight in the coming year and even more teams that will be fighting for race wins and the title.”

How does your team’s schedule look before the season starts?

“October still seems as if it’s a long way away, but preparations are already in full swing. I’m happy that we have already ticked off a few important points: our ABT Schaeffler FE02 has been homologated by the FIA, our driver line-up with Daniel and Lucas is fixed, the most important partners like Schaeffler are still on board. We are currently having some interesting discussions, so that I think there could be some good news to be announced. Testing commences soon including the official days at Donington and a small presentation by our team in September – and before you know it we are sat in a plane again heading for Hong Kong …”

… where the new season starts on October 9. How do you like the recently announced calendar?

“I think it’s excellent. Many thought that races through Paris or Berlin are unbeatable. And now we will really contest our finale in the streets of New York. Locations like Montreal or Marrakesh are also impressive, Berlin and Monaco will be magnificent like always. We are looking forward to the next tour with Formula E.”
