Ford Motor Company unveiled the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, a first-of-its-kind sun-powered vehicle with the potential to deliver the best of what a plug-in hybrid offers – without depending on the electric grid for fuel.

Instead of powering its battery from an electrical outlet, Ford CMAX Solar Energi Concept harnesses the power of the sun by using a special concentrator that acts like a magnifying glass, directing intense rays to solar panels on the vehicle roof.

“Ford C-MAX Solar Energi Concept shines a new light on electric transportation and renewable energy,” said Mike Tinskey, Ford global director of vehicle electrification and infrastructure. “As an innovation leader, we want to further the public dialog about the art of the possible in moving the world toward a cleaner future.”

Nissan Leaf – Wasei Hirai – Electric Motor News n° 2 (2014)

Wasei Hirai isn’t the average commuter. Instead of sitting in an underground garage or on a city street, his Leaf adds a decidedly modern touch to the grounds of the 750-year-old Anyo-in Temple in Japan, where Hirai is chief priest.

Speaking with Nissan public relations, Hirai–one of the earliest Leaf owners–said the modern electric car compliments the temple “quite naturally,” as both represent a spirit of innovation.

On a more substantial note, he also enjoys the smooth acceleration and quiet interior afforded by the Leaf’s electric powertrain.

Hirai lives on the temple grounds, but uses the car for errands. He’s put 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles) on the Leaf so far, averaging 4,000 to 5,000 kilometers (2,480 to 3,100 miles) per year.

Jaguar XJ All Wheel Drive in the winter – Motor News n° 2 (2014)

Two standard Jaguar XJ All-Wheel Drives have returned successfully from a 2000-mile round trip journey to the coldest city on earth.

On December 19th, thermometers in Dawson City recorded -49ºC (-56F), reportedly making the gold-rush town in Canada’s Yukon Territory the coldest town on the planet – so cold in fact that if you threw a cup of hot water in the air, it instantly turned into a mini blizzard, freezing before it hit the ground.

Perhaps the greatest North American drive in the depths of winter, the aim of the journey was to drive from the Yukon capital Whitehorse (1800 miles north of Vancouver, BC) to a point of perpetual sunset in the shortest daylight week of the year.

The cars employed for the epic adventure were a pair of Jaguar’s recently launched AWD models, powered by the new 340PS 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine.
