Pechino, Cina.17 Settembre 2015. Non è un lavoro facile, ma qualcuno deve pur farlo, quello di essere il compagno di squadra del campione in carica. Per la seconda stagione di Formula E questo ruolo spetta ad Oliver Turvey.

Turvey ha fatto il suo debutto al penultimo appuntamento di Londra, ma quali sono le sue aspettative prima di Pechino? L’abbiamo raggiunto per raccogliere i suoi pensieri …

Complimenti per la notizia che guiderete per NEXTEV TCR la prossima stagione. Hai fatto il tuo debutto in Formula E a Londra ed hai raccolto punti in entrambe le gare. Che cosa significa per te far parte della Formula E?

“Sono davvero emozionato. E’ stato bello correre a Londra e fare il mio debutto al finale di stagione. E ‘stato bello mettere su una dimostrazione di forza e già iniziare a competere con alcuni dei leader del campionato. Mi piace correre su circuiti cittadini ed è un campionato molto eccitante. Ci sono molte nuove tecnologie e con il mio background ingegneristico dall’università e dal lavoro come sviluppo motore con la McLaren trovo quel lato molto interessante. Non vedo l’ora di entrare nel campionato per tutta la stagione”.

Hai citato il tuo ruolo alla McLaren. Potranno gli altri impegni causare dei problemi con il programma in Formula E?

“No, sono stato con la McLaren per sei stagioni come collaudatore e mi sono stati di grande aiuto anche per correre. Quest’anno ho anche corso in Giappone per la Honda nel Super GT. In modo da andare avanti spero di fare bene tutti questi impegni e le gare sia in Super GT che in Formula E. Sarà un anno molto impegnativo ma entusiasmante soprattutto per il ritorno alle monoposto”.

Correrai a fianco del campione in carica Nelson Piquet Jr. Sarà un bene l’utilizzo di Nelson come metro di paragone quest’anno?

“Sicuramente, è bello avere Nelson come compagno di squadra – il campione in carica. Mi dà un buon riferimento e io sicuramente ho lo scopo di batterlo. Spero di riuscire e penso che avere un forte compagno di squadra sia importante. Esso aiuta a guidare la squadra in avanti e Nelson ed io abbiamo lavorato bene insieme a Londra”.

I test pre-campionato sono sembrate difficili per un certo numero di squadre con il nuovo propulsore. Come ti senti mentre si va verso la gara di apertura a Pechino, la gara di casa per la tua squadra?

“Penso che i test, ovviamente, non sono andati bene come avevamo sperato. Quest’anno la maggior parte delle squadre hanno nuovi propulsori quindi ci può essere una differenza di prestazioni tra alcune automobili. Il programma di test è stato un po’ compromesso nei primi due giorni, ma abbiamo fatto buoni progressi attraverso gli altri giorni. Ci siamo concentrati principalmente sullo sviluppo del nuovo propulsore e corremmo a 150kW durante l’intera prova. Staremo a vedere dove ci troviamo a Pechino, ma speriamo di essere in competizione nei primi posti”.

Avete delle finalità e ambizioni specifiche per questa stagione?

“Penso che sia difficile dire troppo dopo i test. Andando avanti nella stagione l’obiettivo è quello di vincere e, ovviamente, tutti vogliono battere Nelson così come vuole batterlo anche il suo compagno di squadra! Credo che l’obiettivo principale è però di risalire la classifica a squadre”.

Turvey: “Everyone wants to beat Nelson including me”

Beijing, China. September 17^th, 2015. It’s not an easy job but someone’s got to do it – team-mate to the reigning champion. For the second season of Formula E this role falls to Oliver Turvey.

Turvey made his debut at the penultimate round in London but what are his expectations heading to Beijing? We caught up with him to get his thoughts…

Congratulations on the news you’ll be driving for NEXTEV TCR this coming season. You made your Formula E debut in London and picked up points in both races. What does it mean to you to be a part of Formula E?

“I’m really excited. It was great to race in London and make my debut at the season finale. It was nice to put on a strong showing and already start competing with some of the frontrunners in the championship. I love racing on street circuits and it’s a very exciting championship to be a part of. There’s a lot of new technology and with my engineering background from university and working as a development driver with McLaren I find that side very interesting. I look forward to joining the championship for a whole season.”

You mentioned your role at McLaren. Will other commitments cause an issue with the Formula E schedule?

“No, I’ve been with McLaren for six seasons as a test driver and they’ve been extremely supportive of me going racing. This year I’ve also been racing in Japan for Honda in Super GT. So going forward hopefully I can fit all of those commitments in and race in both Super GT and Formula E. It will be a busy year but exciting especially getting back in single-seaters.”

You will be racing alongside the reigning champion Nelson Piquet Jr. Will it be good for you to use Nelson as a yardstick this year?

“Definitely, it’s great to have Nelson as a team-mate – the current champion. It gives me a good reference and I’ll definitely aim to beat him. Hopefully I can and I think that having a strong team-mate is important. It helps drive the team forward and Nelson and I worked well together in London.”

Pre-season testing looked difficult for a number of teams with the new powertrain. How do you feel heading to the opening race in Beijing, the home race for your team?

“I think testing obviously didn’t go as smoothly as we’d hoped for. This year the majority of teams have new powertrains so there may well be a performance difference between some cars. The testing programme was slightly compromised on the first two days but we made good progress across the other days. We focussed mainly on the development of the new powertrain and ran 150kW laps the whole test. We’ll see where we stand in Beijing but hopefully we’ll be competing at the front.”

Do you have any specific aims and ambitions for this season?

“I think it’s difficult to read into testing too much. Going into the season the aim is to win and obviously everyone wants to beat Nelson and as his team-mate I also want to beat him! I guess the main objective though is to move up the team standings.”
