Grande impresa di Sam Bird che coglie la prima vittoria della stagione per il DS Virgin Racing

Buenos Aires, Argentina. 7 Febbraio 2016. C’è voluto abilità, c’è voluta pazienza e c’è voluto un eccellente team di gestione, e così, dopo appena quattro gare, DS Virgin Racing ha ottenuta la loro prima vittoria della stagione. E tutto è stato fatto in un modo incredibili.

“Sono così felice, sono così felice per tutta la squadra”, dice Sam. “Questa è la nostra prima vittoria da DS Virgin Racing, abbiamo lavorato a stretto contatto con DS dall’inizio della stagione per capire meglio la macchina e dopo tutto questo lavoro è arrivata la gara che ho vinto oggi, non solo per me ma per l’intera squadra. Questa vittoria è per tutti”.

Con così tanti cambi di leadership in una tipica gara di Formula E, si tratta di una vera e propria sfida tenere su il primo posto dall’inizio alla fine, ma questo è esattamente quello che Sam Bird ha fatto oggi. Dopo aver dominato le qualifiche e segnato il giro più veloce nella Super Pole per aggiudicarsi la pole position per la gara, Bird sapeva che aveva ottenuto per se stesso le migliori possibilità di successo nella Buenos Aires ePrix.

“Non solo è bello iniziare la gara con solo la pista davanti a te. Finora in questa stagione ho avuto un paio di macchine davanti a me, ma questa volta la mia posizione in griglia non avrebbe potuto essere migliore”.

Bird è riuscito a scongiurare l’attacco di Nico Prost andando in fuga verso la prima curva stretta e da quel momento è rimasto davanti. E’ stato sempre in strettissima pressione dai suoi rivali, ma è riuscito a mantenere la testa dopo il cambio auto, tenendo a bada prima Lucas di Grassi e poi Sebastien Buemi, che ha spinto Sam nell’estremamente difficile variante a destra fino all’ultimo giro.

“E ‘stata una gara intensa,” dice Alex Tai, Team Principal del DS Virgin Racing. “Naturalmente, le emozioni si sono amplificate quando si è in prima posizione. Sam ha fatto un lavoro incredibile nel difendere la sua posizione per tutta la durata della gara, io sono sempre stato fiducioso perché abbiamo alcuni dei piloti più talentuosi sulla griglia e penso che oggi le prestazioni di Sam l’hanno dimostrato. In realtà, penso che sia uno dei migliori piloti che molti di noi vedremo.”

L’altro pilota della DS Virgin Racing Jean Eric Vergne ha fatto molto bene, prendendo in considerazione il poco tempo in pista che ha avuto a disposizione a causa di un attacco di intossicazione alimentare durante la notte. Jean Eric ha perso sia la prima che la seconda prove libere nel corso della giornata, il che significava effettivamente di andare in qualifica completamente cieco.

“E ‘stata una giornata difficile per JEV, non è stato affatto bene e penso che il giro che ha fatto in qualifica dimostra quanto è bravo davvero. Non aveva guidato in tutto il giorno, e per finire entro un secondo nel primo gruppo di qualifiche dimostra che è un grande pilota conducente “, continua Tai. “Lui sarà in gran forma per il Messico così dovremo guardare al futuro”.

L’atmosfera nel box DS Virgin Racing, quando Bird ha attraversato la linea era elettrizzante. Dopo le prove a Punta del Este, sia DS Virgin Racing che gli ingegneri DS Performance erano sicuri di aver trovato alcuni miglioramenti nella macchina, ma fino a quando non è stato ottenuto il risultato di Buenos Aires non potevano essere sicuri che le cose sarebbero andate come avevano sperato. Alla fine, tutto il duro lavoro ha pagato, e per renderlo un giorno ancora migliore, i piloti del team hanno dimostrato come sono popolari con i fan perche entrambi hanno vinto il Fanboost.

Xavier Mestelan, Direttore DS Performance si è deliziato con la vittoria della squadra.

Un fine settimana che ha dato a DS Virgin Racing la sua prima vittoria in Formula E e che soddisfazione vedere un simile risultato dopo tutto il duro lavoro! Lasciatemi dire un grande grazie a Sam Bird per questa performance assolutamente eccezionale in qualifica con la super pole e in gara dove ha combattuto fino alla fine. Congratulazioni a Jean-Eric che è riuscitoi a prendere il via nonostante un’intossicazione alimentare grave. Noi continueremo a lavorare per progressare e per vivere altri momenti indimenticabili”.

Incredible performance sees Sam Bird claim first season victory for DS Virgin Racing

Buenos Aires, Argentina, February 7^th, 2016. It took skill, it took patience and it took excellent team management, and so, after just four races, DS Virgin Racing claimed their first win of the season. And it was all done in incredible fashion.

“I’m just so delighted, I’m so happy for the whole team,” says Sam. “This is our first win as DS Virgin Racing, we have worked closely with DS Performance since the start of the season to better understand the car and after all this work I’m ecstatic I won today, not just for myself but for the entire team. This win is for everyone.”

 

With so many lead changes in a typical Formula E race it’s a real challenge to hold onto first place from beginning to end, but that’s exactly what Sam Bird did today. After dominating qualifying and setting the fastest lap in Super Pole to claim pole position for the race, Bird knew he’d given himself the best possible chance for success in the Buenos Aires ePrix.

“It just felt good to be starting the race with just the track ahead. So far this season I have had a few cars in front of me but this time my grid position couldn’t have been better.”

Bird managed to head off Nico Prost on the run down to the first tight corner and from that moment on he stayed out in front.  It was always an extremely close affair, but he came under intense pressure after the car changeover, first of all from Lucas di Grassi, and then from Sebastien Buemi, who pushed Sam extremely hard right to the very last corner.

“It was an intense race,” says Alex Tai, Team Principal of DS Virgin Racing. “Of course, the emotions are amplified when you’re in first place. Sam did an incredible job at defending his position the whole way through, I’ve always been confident we have some of the most talented drivers on the grid and I think Sam’s performance today shows that.  In fact, I think it is one of the best drives many of us will see.”

DS Virgin Racing’s other driver Jean Eric Vergne did extremely well, taking into consideration what little track time he had due to a bout of food poisoning during the night.  Jean Eric missed both Free Practice One and Free Practice Two earlier in the day, which effectively meant he went into qualifying completely blind.

“It’s been a tough day for Jev, he’s not been well at all and I think that the lap that he did in qualifying just shows how good he really is. He hadn’t driven all day, and to finish within one second of P1 shows that he is a more than capable driver,” continues Tai. “He will be fighting fit for Mexico so we have that to look forward to.”

The atmosphere in the DS Virgin Racing garage when Bird crossed the line was electrifying. After testing in Punta del Este, both DS Virgin Racing and DS Performance engineers were confident they had found some improvements in the car, but until the result in Buenos Aires they couldn’t be confident that things would play out as they had hoped.  In the end, all of the hard work paid off, and to make it an even better day, the team’s drivers showed how popular they are with fans by both winning Fanboost.
