Donington Park, Gran Bretagna. 2 Settembre 2015. C’è stato un contrasto tra i due giorni di test a Donington Park per Robin Frijns. L’olandese non è riuscito a scendere in pista il penultimo giorno con il team Andretti ma ha percorso 37 giri nella seconda giornata a seguito del passaggio al powertrain della prima stagione nel giorno finale dei test. Abbiamo raggiunto l’ex campione di Formula Renault 3.5 per sentire i suoi pensieri sulla vettura di Formula E e le possibilità di sedersi in un auto in griglia di Pechino…
Come hai fatto ad avere il contatto per fare i test?
“Beh, il mio manager ha avuto un colloquio con il team Andretti e, naturalmente, sanno quello che ho fatto finora nella mia carriera e mi hanno messo in macchina per due giorni di test a Donington”.
Avevi mai guidato la vettura di Formula E prima di questo test?
“Ho fatto un giorno di test con un’altra squadra qualche settimana fa, quindi è stata la seconda volta che mi sono messo al volante di una vettura di Formula E”.
E’ stato abbastanza bagnato in entrambe le giornate di test, quali sono i tuoi pensieri iniziali riguardo la macchina?
“E’ un pò più lenta di altre serie a cui sono abituato, ma è una macchina divertente da guidare. Ha una grande tecnologia dietro e molte cose con cui giocare sul volante. La gestione della batteria e la rigenerazione è una sfida completamente diversa”.
Che tipo di programma è stat svolto lavorando con il team?
“Sono riuscito a fare una simulazione di qualifica a 200kW, ma poi è arrivata la pioggia ed è stato difficile ottenere dati utili con tanto aquaplaning”.
Ti vedremo a Pechino nel mese di ottobre?
“Lo spero davvero, non è la mia decisione. Ho molta voglia di correre per questa squadra, sono veramente professionali e mi piace lavorare per loro. Aspettiamo e vediamo!”.

The Dutchman didn’t manage any running on the penultimate day with the Andretti team but covered 37 laps following the switch to the season one powertrain for the final test day. We caught up with the former Renault 3.5 champion to get his thoughts on the Formula E car and the chances of sitting on the grid in Beijing…
So how did the test come about?
“Well my managers had a talk with the Andretti team and of course they know what I have done so far in my career and they put me in the car for two test days in Donington.”
Have you ever driven the Formula E car prior to this test?
“I did one test day with another team some weeks ago, so it was the second time I’d got behind the wheel of a Formula E car.”
It was quite wet on both test days, what are your initial thoughts of the car?
“It’s a bit slower than other series I’m used to but it’s a fun car to drive. It’s got all that technology behind you and a lot of things to play with on the steering wheel. The battery management and regeneration is a completely different challenge.”
What sort of program were you working on with the team?
“I managed to do a qualifying simulation at 200kw but then the rain came and it was difficult to get useful data with so much aquaplaning.”
Will we see you in Beijing in October?
“I really hope so, it’s not my decision. I really want to drive for this team, they are really professional and I like working for them. Let’s wait and see!”
