Nelson Piquet Jr dietro il casco

China, 15 Marzo 2015.

Nelson Piquet Jr behind the helmet

China, March 2015.

Ever wondered why a driver’s helmet is the way it is?

Who picks the colours, design and where did it originate?

Well, apart from being a mandatory piece of safety equipment, helmets are the driver’s equivalent of a personal statement. Their way of expressing themselves or playing out any superstitions, and Formula E drivers are no exception. We caught up with China Racing’s Nelson Piquet Jr to find out the thinking behind his…

“When I started racing at first I had a motorbike helmet that wasn’t painted at all – I didn’t even have a race suit for my first couple of months racing – and then finally a friend of my father had a kid that raced and he took an old helmet of his and painted it and gave it to me. That was my first ever helmet and I still have it at home. It was the same as the colours I used in GP2 – silver and a strong orange. It’s a nice design with the family teardrop and I just changed the colour compared to my father.
“My father doesn’t really know where the design came from. He did a design and he says it was a bit like a tennis ball going by or something like that [Piquet Sr. was a promising tennis player before deciding to pursue a racing career], but there’s no clear story. He just designed something with his own hand a long time ago when people painted their own helmets and it just went on from there.

“During my career I’ve changed the colour a lot of times to suit sponsors and keep people happy. I’ve been playing around with different colours but I do want to go back to my original silver and orange colours soon. The design never changes – only the colours – sometimes there’s details inside the design – the teardrop or the background – like my first full season NASCAR helmet was a tribute to NASCAR. It was a carbon background that had the names of all the tracks I was going to race at.”
