Monaco, 10 Maggio 2015.

Monaco. May 10th, 2015. Europe gave Formula E the best possible welcome. Against a backdrop that has witnessed the exploits of the greatest legends of motorsport, the first championship for cars powered entirely by electricity generated masses of interest – there were over 23,000 spectators packed into the grandstands – and the sporting spectacle itself was a match for its setting.

No surprise therefore that Formula E’s CEO, Alejandro Agag is delighted with how things went.

“It was a fantastic day and if the guys who won the first ever Monaco Grand Prix with a Bugatti, back in 1929 had predicted that 90 years later there would be a race for electric cars run on these same streets, they would have been taken for mad men! And yet, here we are, celebrating a day that I believe can truly be described as historic. Being able to put on a show, on what is motorsport’s most famous stage, is a great result for all of us at Formula E, for the drivers and for our partners.”

Also on the purely sporting front, the action was spectacular.

“Yes, it was another very closely contested race,” agreed Agag. “The duel in the closing stages between di Grassi and Piquet was extremely close, as they fought it out for the championship lead. Buemi was magnificent, doing a perfect job of managing his energy reserves. It means that a Swiss driver has now joined what was an all-Brazilian battle for the title, ensuring that the championship will be very exciting and tense right down to the final race. The carnage immediately after the start was certainly spectacular. These things happen in racing, but the most important thing is that no one was injured and in terms of the safety procedures everything was done perfectly.”

Now, there’s hardly time to pause for breath, because in less than two weeks, everyone will be back on track in Germany for the DHL Berlin ePrix, which takes place on 23rd May.

“It will be a very different setting to this one. The race will be run at an airport, the one at Tempelhof, therefore on a very different track surface. Above all though, it takes place in Germany, a country where the theme of sustainability is a very popular topic and electrical forms of mobility are on the increase. We can’t wait to go racing in Berlin!”
