Gatwick, Gran Bretagna. 23 Dicembre 2016. DS Virgin Racing si reca a Las Vegas nel mese di gennaio 2017 per partecipare all’eRace virtuale di Formula E.

L’evento si svolge durante il Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show ed è il più grande evento eSport del suo genere nella storia, con un montepremi 1 milione di dollari che si terrà il 7 gennaio.

L’evento vede tutti i 20 piloti di Formula E, più dieci giocatori professionisti testa a testa in una serie di turni di qualificazione nello stesso stile degli eventi convenzionali della Formula E. A seguito di ciò, l’eRace vera e propria vedrà una combinazione dei venti piloti di Formula E ed i giocatori competere per il montepremi.

I giocatori sono stati scelti da una serie di eliminazioni on-line denominate Road To Vegas.

Le squadre di Formula E quindi hanno ‘adottato’ un giocatore ciascuno. Anche se non formalmente legato alla squadra, i giocatori indosseranno il kit ed i colori della squadra.

Il pilota assegnato al DS Virgin Racing è Graham Carroll.

Graham Carroll oltre ad essere un giocatore professionista, è anche un pilota professionista. Corre in Formula Ford, ha vinto il Walter Hayes Trophy 2015, tornato al motorsport dopo una pausa di 7 anni. Prima di questo, è arrivato a podio 7 volte nella stessa serie nel 2008.

Attualmente in prima posizione nella qualificazione, per Carroll rappresenta una grande opportunità interfacciarsi con i piloti di Formula E Sam Bird e Jose Maria Lopez.

Scendendo dalla sua casa di Musselburgh, in Scozia, il 13 Dicembre scorso Carroll ha trascorso una mezza settimana con il pilota DS Virgin Racing Sam Bird. La coppia si è addestrata insieme nel simulatore del team con sede a Gatwick, prima di volare alla base del DS Virgin Racing in Satory, a Versailles, a lavorare insieme sul simulatore.

Parlando della sua esperienza, Graham ha detto:

“E’ affascinante vivere il contrasto della sensazione di guida tra un simulatore di gioco e un simulatore da vero e proprio pilota insieme al DS Virgin Racing a Satory. Sento che c’è molto che entrambi i giocatori ed i piloti possono imparare gli uni dagli altri – si spera in tempo per Las Vegas”.

Sam Bird ha fatto eco a questo sentimento:

“La sfida maggiore con il gioco, dal punto di vista di un pilota, è imparare ad operare in una sorta di vuoto. La macchina non può parlare a voi. La pista non si muove sotto di voi, quindi si tratta di imparare a prendere i vostri spunti puramente visivi”.

L’eRace a Las Vegas utilizzerà la stessa Playseat e rFactor 2 impostata come quelle viste durante le gare di Formula E eRaces nelle piste durante la stagione.

Come per le eRaces, le auto sono segnati con i colori della squadra, ma hanno un set-up comune – a differenza di quelle utilizzati dai giocatori durante i round di eliminazione, che erano stati istituiti per le singole specifiche.

All’evento Vegas sarà presente anche una demo di Formula E, auto da sviluppo che correrà nell’iconico Strip di Las Vegas.

Formula E ha chiesto al pilota della DS Virgin Racing Sam Bird di guidare la macchina durante l’esibizione, che si svolgerà il mercoledì 4 Gennaio alle 22.00 ora locale.

Durante il training, Graham Carroll si è incontrato con il Team Principal Alex Tai durante la cena a Londra.

“Siamo lieti di avere Graham con noi per questo innovativo nuovo capitolo della Formula E”, ha detto Alex. “1,1 miliardi di persone in tutto il mondo ora sono impegnati con gli eSports. Chissà quanti potenziali stelle sono là fuori che semplicemente non hanno avuto i mezzi finanziari o le opportunità per promuovere la loro abilità? Forse la prossima stella del motorsport non sarà scoperta al volante di una macchina fisica”.

Parlando del suo attaccamento alla squadra, Graham Carroll ha dichiarato:

“Non riesco ancora a crederci. In un minuto sono passato da essere seduto nella soffitta di casa mia, con i Giochi per bambini ed un gioco online, e subito dopo mi sono seduto con il Team Principal della mia squadra preferita di Formula E, a discutere le strategie per Las Vegas. Non potrei essere più eccitato!”

Il Visa Vegas eRace inizia alle 04:00 il Sabato, 7 Gennaio (ora di Las Vegas) e verrà visualizzato sul Twitch e anche trasmesso in diretta sul sito web Formula E www.fiaformulae.com

Un mini documentario che segue Sam Bird & Graham Carroll nel training nei diversi simulatori nel Regno Unito e la Francia sarà mostrato davanti all’eRace.

Gatwick, UK. 23rd December 2016. DS Virgin Racing travels to Las Vegas in January 2017 to take part in Formula E’s virtual eRace. The event takes place during the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show and is the biggest eSports event of its kind in history, with a $1M prize pot.

Taking place on January 7th, the event sees all 20 Formula E drivers plus ten professional gamers go head to head in a series of qualifying rounds in the same style as conventional Formula E events. Following that, the eRace proper will see a combination of twenty Formula E drivers and gamers compete for the prize pool.

The gamers have been chosen by a series of Road To Vegas online elimination rounds. The Formula E teams have now ‘adopted’ a gamer each. Whilst not formally attached to the team, the gamers will be wearing team kit and colours. DS Virgin Racing’s allotted driver is Graham Carroll.

Graham Carroll is in addition to being a professional gamer, a professional driver also. Racing in Formula Ford, he won the 2015 Walter Hayes Trophy, having returned to motorsport following a 7 year hiatus. Previous to this, he podiumed 7 times in the same series in 2008.

Currently in 1st position on the qualification leaderboard, Carroll represents a huge opportunity in coaching Formula E drivers Sam Bird and Jose Maria Lopez. Travelling down from his home of Musselburgh, Scotland on the 13th December, Carroll spent half a week with DS Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird. The pair trained together in both Carroll’s team simulator based in Gatwick, before flying to DS Virgin Racing’s base in Satory, Versailles, to work together on the simulator there.

Speaking of his experience, Graham said: “It’s fascinating to experience the contrast in driving feel between a gaming simulator and a ‘real driver’ simulator like DS Virgin Racing’s set up in Satory. I feel there’s a lot both gamers and drivers can learn from each other – hopefully in time for Las Vegas!”.

Sam Bird echoed the sentiment: “The major challenge with gaming, from a driver’s perspective, is learning to operate in a kind of vacuum. The car can’t speak to you. The track doesn’t move underneath you, so it’s about learning to take your cues purely from the visual.”

The eRace in Las Vegas will use the same Playseat and rFactor 2 set up as seen during the Formula E eRaces at tracks during the season. As with the location eRaces, the cars are branded in team colours but have a uniform set up – unlike the gamers’ own cars used during the elimination rounds which had been set up to individual specs.

The Vegas event will also feature a Formula E development car demo run down the iconic Las Vegas Strip. Formula E have asked DS Virgin Racing Driver Sam Bird to drive the car during the run, which takes place on Wed 4th January at 2200 local time.

In between training, Graham Carroll met with Team Principal Alex Tai over dinner in London.

“We’re delighted to have Graham joining us for this innovative new chapter of Formula E.”  Alex said. “1,1 billion people worldwide now engage with eSports. Who knows how many potential stars are out there who simply haven’t had the financial means or opportunities to foster their skill set? Perhaps motorsport’s next star won’t be discovered behind the wheel of a physical car.”

Speaking of his attachment to the team, Graham Carroll said “I still can’t believe it. One minute I’m sitting in the loft of my house, messing about in an online game, and next I’m sat with the Team Principal of my favourite Formula E team, discussing strategies for Las Vegas. I couldn’t be more excited!”

The Visa Vegas eRace starts at 4pm on Saturday, January 7 (Vegas time) will be shown on Twitch and also streamed live on the Formula E website www.fiaformulae.com. A mini documentary following Sam Bird & Graham Carroll as they trained in different simulators in the UK and France will be shown ahead of the eRace.
