Long Beach, California. 8 Aprile 2015. USA. Se c’era qualche pilota nel paddock di Long Beach che aveva bisogno di un buon risultato, era Lucas Di Grassi.
Il pilota Audi Sport ABT ha avuto il fuoco d’acciaio in tutta la giornata della gara ed è stato chiaramente determinato a fermare una povera serie di risultati.
Dopo aver vinto la gara di apertura dell’anno a Pechino, Di Grassi ha inanellato due arrivi tra i primi tre a Putrajaya e Punta del Este per sedersi comodamente in cima alla classifica piloti.
Ma a Buenos Aires ha cominciato a svanire.
Non per colpa sua, Di Grassi è stato vittima di un problema di sospensione, mentre era in testa in Argentina e quindi poteva gestire solo un nono posto a Miami con ancora problemi meccanici.
La prima vittoria in Formula E per l’e.dams-Renault di Nicolas Prost ha significato la perdita della testa della classifica del brasiliano per la prima volta in questa stagione.
Di Grassi sembrava in forma inquietante nelle sessioni di prove libere del mattino a Long Beach, ma è riuscito solo ad agguantare il quarto posto sulla griglia di partenza in qualifica con le prime 16 auto separate da meno di un secondo.
Per un momento sembrava che la fortuna si fosse completamente esaurita quando la sua batteria da 12 Volt ha iniziato a versare fumo fuori dalla sua auto nel parco chiuso. Tuttavia, la macchina era pronta quando le luci del semaforo si sono spente.
Entrambi i piloti Audi Sport ABT hanno corso naso contro coda per la maggior parte della gara, ma Daniel Abt ha dovuto scontare una penalità del tipo drive-through per aver superato i 150 kW ed ha consegnato il terzo posto a Di Grassi.
Egli ha detto:
“E’ un onore essere di nuovo in testa al campionato. Dovevamo aver fatto un ottimo risultato a Buenos Aires e un buon risultato a Miami senza i guasti meccanici, che non sono stati né colpa mia né colpa della squadra. Tornare sul podio era l’obiettivo principale qui anche se è stato il mio quarto podio in sei gare … ma significava lasciare dietro due risultati difficili”.

Di Grassi stops the rot

Long Beach, California, USA. April 8th, 2015. If there was any driver in the Long Beach paddock that needed a strong result it was Lucas di Grassi. The Audi Sport ABT driver had a steely focus throughout the build-up to the race and was clearly determined to stop a poor run of results.
After winning the opening race of the year in Beijing, di Grassi strung together two more top-three finishes in Putrajaya and Punta del Este to sit comfortably at the top of the drivers’ standings. But in Buenos Aires it started to unravel.
Through no fault of his own di Grassi fell victim to a suspension issue whilst in the lead in Argentina and then could only manage ninth in Miami with yet more mechanical problems. Nicolas Prost’s first Formula E victory for e.dams-Renault meant the Brazilian lost the championship lead for the first time this season.
Di Grassi looked in ominous form in the morning’s practice sessions in Long Beach but only managed fourth on the grid in qualifying with the top-16 cars separated by under a second. For a moment it looked like his luck may have run out completely as his 12V battery caused fumes to pour out of his car in parc ferme. However, the car was ready come lights out.
Both Audi Sport ABT drivers were running nose-to-tail for the majority of the race but polesitter Daniel Abt had to serve a drive-through penalty for exceeded 150kW and handed third place to di Grassi.
He said:
“It’s an honour to be back in the lead of the championship. We should have had a very good result in Buenos Aires and a good result in Miami without the mechanical failures, which were neither mine nor the team’s fault. To return to the podium was the main goal here even if it was my fourth podium in six races…it was off the back of two tough results.”
