Marrakesh, Marocco. 12 Novembre 2016. La FIA di Formula E Championship ha completato il suo debutto africano quando la bandiera a scacchi ha sorvolato e decretato la fine del Round 2 della gara a Marrakesh. Il circuito di 2,97 km sulla strada della vivace città del Marocco ha lasciato i piloti MS Amlin Andretti con le posizioni di gara 11 e 20 per Robin Frijns ed António Félix Da Costa rispettivamente.

Dopo un buon inizio di gara, Da Costa era in ritmo per guadagnare posizioni in pista quando un problema di sistemi con la vettura n° 28 ha causato lo spegnimento completo del sistema elettrico della macchina al giro 11, mentre era in ottava posizione. La mancanza di corrente ha portato ad un prematuro cambiamento macchina per il pilota portoghese. Finita la speranza di vincere, da Costa con la sua seconda macchina ha cercato di conquistare il giro più veloce VISA della gara, che ha tenuto per se fino agli ultimi giri del Marrakesh ePrix quando Duval gli ha rubato il giro più veloce e il punto extra nel campionato.

Con un’intelligente gestione dell’energia, Frijns ha mostrato di cercare di concretizzare la promessa presto restando tra i top 10. Anche se ha fatto una gara pulita, senza incidenti di rilievo, in pista non era in grado di eguagliare la gestione dell’energia dell’olandese creando un gap troppo grande ed una sfida per Frijns come quella di recuperare terreno dopo un testa coda a metà stint.

La squadra Andretti Formula E lascia nord Africa, con 18 punti nel campionato squadre, mettendo la squadra al quinto posto nella classifica a squadre. Da Costa è classificato settimo nella classifica del campionato piloti, mentre Frijns si trova in nona posizione.

La prossima corse sarà in Argentina per il Round 3 a Buenos Aires il 18 febbraio 2017.

“Siamo venuti a Marrakesh con la speranza di un altro buon risultato dopo il grande inizio che abbiamo avuto a Hong Kong. Le qualifiche sono andate un po’ meglio (di Hong Kong), in generale e le vetture si sono qualificate nel 9° e 10° posto. Penso che avremmo potuto guadagnare almeno una coppia di punti, ma rispetto a quello che è successo a Hong Kong – sono felice di avere le auto con le quattro ruote su di loro alla fine della sessione.

“Riguardo la gara, semplicemente non era il nostro giorno. António purtroppo ha avuto un problema con la vettura che ha causato lo spegnimento. Ci è voluto un po’ di tempo per essere riavviata e alla fine abbiamo perso un giro o due. La macchina aveva un buon passo, perché nella maggior parte della gara ha avuto il giro più veloce purtroppo l’abbiamo perso alla fine. Poi Robin era alla guida in una gara abbastanza costante pronto a colpire i suoi obiettivi energetici e poi ha fatto un errore in frenata ed ha lasciato che alcune macchine lo sorpassassero. Nel modo in cui la gara si svolgeva, senza incidenti di rilievo e tutti a gestire la loro energia, non era in grado di recuperare posizioni. Purtroppo, siamo lontani nel campionato dopo Marrakech per non essere riusciti a segnare punti nei campionati squadre né in quello dei piloti. Siamo un po’ delusi, a dire il vero, ma è una bella pista e la nostra prima volta qui in Africa. Siamo lieti di essere qui e cercheremo di essere più avanti alla prossima gara in Argentina.”

“L’inizio della gara è stato OK … Al primo giro, ho frenato all’esterno ed António mi ha superato. Sono venuto a un punto in cui ero un po ‘più veloce di Heidfeld e lui sembrava di essere in difficoltà. Ho cercato un varco e si è difeso, ho frenato e bloccato gli due pneumatici anteriori in una curva e questo mi ha fatto fare un testa coda. E’ stata una sfortuna, ma è stato uno di quei momenti in cui si cerca qualcosa e se funziona sei un eroe, e se non lo fai sei fuori. Ho pensato che con la seconda vettura si potevano fare alcuni passi in avanti perché siamo stati gli ultimi ad entrare per il cambio macchina, ma non ho davvero visto alcuna vetture in lotta alla fine. E’ più competitiva e tutti hanno lo stesso modo di guidare in modo che sarà sempre più duro sorpassare. E’ un pò un peccato che non abbiamo segnato punti oggi, al massimo avremmo potuto essere in Posizione 8. Speriamo che la prossima gara sia migliore”.

“Abbiamo avuto un buon inizio di gara ed abbiamo guadagnato una posizione nel rettilineo. Mi sentivo bene in macchina e abbiamo avuto una buona gestione energetica; correvamo nella top 10 e guardando bene per guadagnare un paio di posti. Poi abbiamo avuto un problema tecnico con la macchina e ci siamo fermati in pista. Questa è stata la fine della gara per noi. Sono andato nella seconda macchina con l’obiettivo di segnare il giro più veloce, che abbiamo tenuto fino ad un giro o due dalla fine. E’ frustrante, perché è stato un mese di duro lavoro per il team MS Amlin Andretti e fermare la macchina così morta proprio lì è difficile da digerire. Abbiamo bisogno di riorganizzarci ed essere tutti motivati ​​ad andare di nuovo a Buenos Aires.”

Marrakesh, Morocco. 12th November 2016. The FIA Formula E Championship completed its African debut as the checkered flag flew over Round 2 of competition in Marrakesh. The 2.97km circuit through the street of Morocco’s vibrant city left the MS Amlin Andretti drivers with race finishes in 11th and 20th for António Félix da Costa and Robin Frijns, respectively.

After a strong race start, da Costa was on pace to gain track position when a systems issue with the No. 28 caused the all-electric machine to switch off on Lap 11 while running in the eighth position. The power failure resulted in an early car change for the Portuguese driver. With hopes of winning gone, da Costa set out in his second car to claim the Visa Fastest Lap of the race, which he held until the closing laps of the Marrakesh ePrix when Duval stole the Fastest Lap and the extra championship point.

With strong energy management, Frijns showed early promise running inside the top 10. Though with a clean race, free of major incident, the field was able to match the Dutchman’s energy management creating too great of a challenge for Frijns to make up ground after an mid-stint spin.

The Andretti Formula E Team leaves north Africa with 18 team championship points, placing the team fifth in the team standings. Da Costa is ranked seventh in the driver standings while Frijns sits in ninth.

The electric street racing series will next head to Argentina for Round 3 of competition from Buenos Aires on Feb. 18, 2017.

“We came to Marrakesh with high hopes of another good result after the great start we had in Hong Kong. Qualifying went a little bit better (than Hong Kong), generally and the cars qualified ninth and 10th. I think there maybe were a couple of spots we could have had, but compared to what happened in Hong Kong – happy to have cars with all four wheels on them at the end of the session.

“When it comes to the race, it just wasn’t our day. António unfortunately had a problem with car which caused it to switch off. It took a little while to get restarted and in the end we lost a lap or two. The car had good pace, because for a majority of the race he had the fastest lap unfortunately we lost it at the end.   Then Robin was driving a fairly steady race hitting his energy targets and then made a mistake in braking and let a few cars past. With the way the race unfolded, with no significant incidents and everyone managing their energy, he wasn’t able to make up the spots. Unfortunately, we’re coming away from Marrakesh not having added to our total in teams points or driver points. We are a little disappointed, to be honest, but it was a great racetrack and our first time here in Africa. We are pleased to be here and will look onward to the next race in Argentina.”

Robin Frijns – N°. 27 MS Amlin Andretti ATEC-02

“The start of the race was OK… On the first lap, I out-braked myself and António overtook me. I came to a point when I was a bit quicker than Heidfeld and he seemed to be struggling. I went for a gap and he defended, I braked and locked the two fronts in the corner causing me to spin. It was unlucky and unfortunate, but it was one of those times when you try something and, if it works you’re a hero, and if it doesn’t you’re on the outside. I thought with the second car we could make some steps in moving forward as we were the latest to come in for the car change, but I didn’t really see any cars struggling at the end. It’s more competitive and everybody has the same way of driving now so it’s getting tougher to overtake. It’s a bit of a shame we didn’t score any points today, at maximum we could have been P8. Hopefully the next race will be a better one.”

“We had a good start to the race and gained a position straightaway. I was feeling good in the car and we had very good energy management; we were running in the top 10 and looking good to get a few more places. Then we had a technical issue with the car and we stropped on track. That was the end of the race for us, really. We came in and jumped into the other car with the goal of going for the Fastest Lap, which we held until a lap or two from the end. It’s frustrating because it has been a month of hard work for the MS Amlin Andretti team and to die right there is hard to swallow. We need to regroup and get everyone motivated to go again in Buenos Aires.”
