Il pilota Mahindra Racing Nick Heidfeld è arrivato terzo ed è salito sul podio al Hong Kong ePrix finendo quasi a mangiarsi le unghie con quasi zero per cento di energia rimanente nella batteria della sua auto.

Il rookie della Formula E Felix Rosenqvist ha registrato il giro più veloce della corsa a seguito di un testa coda che ha danneggiato la sua prima auto.

La M3Electro ha dimostrato di essere una macchina di buon ritmo e ha contribuito Mahindra Racing a festeggiare un successo nell’avvio della terza stagione a Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, 9 Ottobre 2016. Mahindra Racing ha fatto un inizio impressionante della sua terza stagione nel FIA Formula E Championship, segnando un podio e impostando il giro più veloce nella prima edizione del Hong Kong ePrix, il round di apertura della stagione 2016-17.

Il pilota tedesco Nick Heidfeld ha iniziato la gara di 45 giri dalla decima posizone sulla griglia di partenza e ha approfittato del caos del primo giro per passare alla quinta. Gestendo la disponibilità di energia della sua prima vettura M3Electro, Heidfeld e Mahindra Racing erano in grado di completare la prima metà gara prima del cambio auto pensando a guadagnare più posizioni nella seconda parte.

E’ salito fino al terzo posto, si è concentrato sul completamento dei giri puliti durante la seconda metà della gara ed ha tagliato il traguardo poco prima che la sua seconda macchina abbia raggiunto il valore di energia zero per cento.

Il rookie svedese Felix Rosenqvist ha subito un inizio difficile della sua carriera in Formula E. Dopo aver iniziato da un incoraggiante sesto posto in griglia, è stato catturato nel traffico gara in anticipo. Poi ha subito dei danni alla sua M3Electro da un testa-coda ad alta velocità che l’ha mandato nelle retrovie del gruppo forzando uno scambio auto in anticipo. Mai duro a rinunciare, Rosenqvist ha mostrato il suo coraggio e il vero potenziale segnando il giro più veloce della gara in lotta per 15esimo posto.

Il ritmo della Mahindra M3Electro sviluppato in tutto il circuito cittadino di Hong Kong costruito nel porto centrale della lunghezza di 1,86 km ha sottolineato la promessa mostrata dalla squadra nel test pre-stagione.

Nick Heidfeld ha detto:

“Sono molto contento di essere tornato sul podio nella gara di apertura di questa stagione di Formula E. E’ qualcosa che non ti aspetti quando si inizia dalla decima posizione sulla griglia di partenza! E’ un bel risultato per la squadra considerando tutto il duro lavoro svolto nel corso degli ultimi due mesi. Il passo della vettura nella pre-stagione è stato incoraggiante, ma non si sa mai veramente dove ti trovi fino a quando si svolge l’intera gara. Ho avuto una grande fuga fin dall’inizio ed ho guadagnato più posizioni nel primo giro impostando molte curve andando dalla parte esterna. C’è stato un problema con i dati energetici sul giro, ma una buona comunicazione con la squadra mi ha permesso di fare tutto manualmente. Abbiamo anche fatto una buona chiamata sulla strategia dello stop durante la safety car e sono stato in grado di superare durante lo scambio auto. Dopo ero in terza posizione, con Nico Prost che si avvicinava velocemente da dietro, ma verso la fine della gara sono riuscito a tirare fuori tutto e questo è davvero promettente se si considera che sono uno dei contendenti più forti. Speriamo di poter ora completare velocemente un passo in avanti nel campionato.”

Felix Rosenqvist ha detto:

“Ho avuto una buona partenza, poi a sua volta nel primo giro ci fu una grande ammucchiata ed essendo all’interno non ho potuto uscire. Mi sentivo come se fossi davvero competitivo durante la gara, ma a un certo punto ho rischiato troppo. Anche se io non sono al 100% affiatato con la velocità dei dati e la gestione dell’energia in Formula E, penso che ciò che è davvero promettente è che posso guidare in modo efficiente, ma anche essere molto veloce. C’è ancora molto da lavorare ma la velocità c’è. Anche questa gara mi dà molta esperienza e se sei in una situazione difficile, è importante restare calmi e concentrarsi sulla gestione dell’energia, quindi attendere la prossima opportunità di sorpasso. Il pacchetto della M3Electro è forte, e mi mi sono adattato bene alla guida, quindi l’unico obiettivo, alla fine, è stato quello di fare il giro più veloce. E’ stata dura e ho fatto un paio di tentativi, ma alla fine ci sono riuscito. Sembra davvero promettente per il resto della stagione, la vettura si sente veramente bene e penso che la squadra ha fatto un lavoro incredibile”.

Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal, Mahindra Racing di Formula E ha detto:

“Grazie a tutto il team per il lavoro ben fatto. Sono davvero soddisfatto con l’inizio della nostra stagione di  Formula E a Hong Kong perché riflette il duro ritmo con cui abbiamo lavorato durante l’estate con i test pre-campionato nella nuova M3Electro. Mentre la qualifica avrebbe potuto andare meglio per Mahindra Racing Nick ha fatto una gara fantastica. Ha fatto un inizio molto aggressivo e subito ha guadagnato sei posizioni prima di gestire l’energia della sua vettura e adattare la strategia in pista. E’ deludente per Felix ma ha mostrato potenziale incoraggiante ed ha recuperato dal suo errore molto bene. Abbiamo chiesto lui il giro più veloce e la sua perseveranza ha pagato. Sappiamo di avere il pacchetto per lottare per il podio e questo buon inizio ci dà qualcosa su cui costruire le prossime gare.”

Mahindra Racing è quarta nel campionato squadre FIA di Formula E prima di andare alla gara due a Marrakech il prossimo 12 Novembre, quando la Formula E nella sua terza stagione vedrà Mahindra Racing visitare un totale di dieci paesi diversi per 12 corse da Ottobre 2016 fino a Luglio 2017.

Mahindra Racing clinches podium and fastest lap award at first Formula E race in Hong Kong

Mahindra Racing’s Nick Heidfeld finished third on the podium at the Hong Kong ePrix in nail-biting finish with almost zero percent energy remaining in his car’s battery.

Formula E rookie Felix Rosenqvist set the fastest lap of the race following a spin that damaged his first car.

The M3Electro proved to be a pace-setting car and helped Mahindra Racing celebrate a successful season three start in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, 9th October 2016. Mahindra Racing has made an impressive start to its third season in the FIA Formula E Championship, scoring a podium finish and setting the fastest lap in the inaugural Hong Kong ePrix, the opening round of the 2016-17 season.

German driver Nick Heidfeld started the 45-lap race from 10th on the grid and took advantage of first lap chaos to jump to fifth. By managing his first M3Electro’s available energy, Heidfeld and Mahindra Racing were able to time his mid-race car swap in order to gain more positions. He moved up to third, focused on completing clean laps during the second half of the race and crossed the finish line just before his second car reached zero percent energy.

Swedish rookie Felix Rosenqvist endured a tough beginning to his Formula E career. Having started from an encouraging sixth place on the grid, he was caught out in early race traffic. Then damage to his M3Electro from a high-speed spin sent him to the back of the pack by forcing an early car swap. Never one to give up, Rosenqvist showed his mettle and true potential by setting the fastest lap of the race en route to 15th place.

The pace of the Mahindra-developed M3Electro around the bespoke 1.86km Hong Kong Central Harbourfront street circuit underlined the promise shown by the team in pre-season testing.

Nick Heidfeld said:

“I’m very happy to be back on the podium in this Formula E season’s opening race. It’s something you don’t expect when you start 10th on the grid! It is a nice result for the team considering all the hard work over the last couple of months. The pace of the car pre-season was encouraging but you never truly know where you stand until the full race. I had a great getaway from the start and gained more positions in turn one by going around the outside. There was an issue with the energy and lap data, but good communication with the team enabled me to do everything manually. We also made a good call on pit strategy during the safety car and I was able to overtake during the car swap. After that I was third position, with Nico Prost catching quickly from behind, but toward the end of the race I was able to pull away which is really promising considering they are one of the strongest contenders. Let’s hope we can now complete a considerate step forward in the championship.”

Felix Rosenqvist said:

“I had a good start, then in turn one there was a big pile up on the inside and I couldn’t really get out. It felt like I was really competitive during the race but at one point I risked too much. While I am not 100% up to speed with data and energy management in Formula E, I think what’s really promising is that I can drive efficiently, but also be very quick. There’s still more to work on but the speed is there. Even one race gives me a lot of experience and if you’re in tight situation, it’s important to be calm and focus on energy management, then wait for the next opportunity to overtake. The M3Electro package is strong, and I had been driving well, so the only target in the end was to go for fastest lap. It was tough and I had a couple of attempts, but in the end I got it. It looks really promising for the rest of the season, the car feels really good and I think the team has done an amazing job.”

“Thanks to the whole team for a job well done. I am really pleased with the start of our Formula E season in Hong Kong because it reflected the pace that we have worked hard on over the summer with pre-season testing in the new M3Electro. While qualifying could have gone better for Mahindra Racing, Nick drove a fantastic race. He did a very aggressive start and immediately gained six positions before managing his car’s energy and adapting the strategy to move up the field. It’s disappointing for Felix but he showed encouraging potential and recovered from his mistake very strongly. We demanded he set the fastest lap and his persistence paid off. We know we have the package to fight for podiums and this good start gives us something to build on.”

Mahindra Racing is fourth in the FIA Formula E Teams Championship going into race two in Marrakesh next month on November 12. Formula E’s third season will see Mahindra Racing visit a total of ten different countries for 12 races from October 2016 through to July 2017.
