Berlino, Germania. 10 giugno 2017. Felix Rosenqvist ha consegnato a Mahindra Racing una prima vittoria emotiva davanti a uno scenario piena di tifosi al circuito rivisto di Tempelhofring.

Dopo la sessione di qualificazione che ha visto il minor distacco nella storia del FIA Formula E Championship, Rosenqvist è partito dal terzo posto. E’ saltato subito al secondo dopo la lenta partenza di Jose Maria Lopez, prima di diventare gradualmente in primo piano negli specchietti di Lucas di Grassi.

All’inizio della giornata di Grassi aveva preso la super pole Julius Baer con il margine più vicino possibile, superando Lopez per solo 0.001s (un millesimo di secondo), mentre Rosenqvist in terza era a solo 0.083s dalla pole.

Il pilota ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport ha lottato per gestire la temperatura della batteria durante la gara e di conseguenza, la frenata ed il regen risultavano più difficili da gestire. Alla fine Rosenqvist era abbastanza vicino per tentare il sorpasso, guidando intorno al brasiliano attraverso la lunga curva 1.

Ha quasi perso la posizione quando ha fatto un piccolo errore nella curva 9 sul suo giro prima dello scambio auto obbligatorio, è rientrato davanti e si è allontanato per stabilire un vantaggio comodo e prendere una vittoria che ha deliziato la squadra dopo un’attesa di 28 gare.

“Sembra incredibile”, ha detto. “Fin dall’inizio della giornata la vettura si sentiva buona, veloce e coerente. Ho fatto un piccolo errore nella qualificazione per prendere la Super Pole, altrimenti avremmo potuto essere sul palo. Siamo venuti qui molto più preparati (rispetto a quando ero in pole a Marrakech) devo fare un grande complimento alla squadra. Abbiamo alcune persone fantastiche – io l’aspettavo e finalmente è arrivata”.

Dopo aver perso l’ultima volta a Parigi, di Grassi ha avuto bisogno di un grande punteggio questo fine settimana. Tuttavia, dopo le sedute di allenamento del mattino non era troppo ottimista sulle sue possibilità, ma uno sforzo stupefacente in qualifica non solo gli ha permesso di guadagnare la Super Pole con il margine più sottile possibile, ma anche tre punti di bonus aggiuntivi.

Una volta che Rosenqvist aveva stabilito il suo vantaggio su di Grassi, sapeva che il gioco era in alto e ha spostato il suo focus per assicurarsi di rimanesse davanti a Nick Heidfeld che era in terza posizione e ha dato ai tifosi tedeschi che hanno popolato le tribune abbondanti motivi per essere allegri. Con la squalifica post-gara del leader del campionato Sebastien Buemi a causa dei suoi pneumatici con la pressione inferiore a quella indicata da Michelin, di Grassi ha ora ridotto il disavanzo nella lotta per il titolo a soli 22 punti.

Di Grassi ha dichiarato: “La nostra macchina non è stata molto buona, abbiamo iniziato la mattinata completamente persi e poi ho cercato di fare piccoli cambiamenti di set-up e sono stato fortunato a fare un giro molto, molto buono in qualifica. Se guardi al passo puro dalla mattina – questa non era la migliore gara per noi, quindi ho cercato di prendere quanto potevo. Alla fine della prima fase ho cominciato a perdere il regen dato che la temperatura della batteria era troppo alta e lo stesso è successo nella seconda parte”.

Per la terza gara di fila, l’altro pilota Mahindra, Nick Heidfeld, si trovava sul gradino inferiore del podio. Ancora una volta, ha fatto un ottimo inizio per salire in classifica, ma nella sua prima vettura ha lottato per mantenere il ritmo e, piuttosto che sfidare le vetture davanti a lui, ha cercato di allontanarsi da quelle dietro. Dopo la sostituzione dell’auto il suo passo è migliorato e nei giri di chiusura ha ridotto il divario con di Grassi a poco più di un secondo, ma in nessun punto è mai stato abbastanza vicino per tentare il sorpasso.

Heidfeld ha dichiarato: “Questo è un risultato davvero eccezionale per il team considerando da dove siamo venuti. Nella prima vettura stavo lottando ma nella seconda macchina ho iniziato ad avvicinarmi a Lucas. Per un po’ ho pensato che fosse possibile catturarlo ma alla fine non lo è stato.”

Lopez ha fatto una corsa relativamente solitaria nel quarto posto, ma è contento di continuare la sua recente buona forma e aumentare i suoi punti. A seguito della squalifica del compagno di squadra e della penalità di 5 secondi inflitta a Jean-Eric Vergne per un rientro non sicuro, Nico Prost ha mantenuto il suo record di punteggio in ogni gara in questa stagione prendendo il quinto posto, mentre Daniel Abt ha fatto un incredibile inizio per guadagnare punti ed ha ottenuto la sesta posizione.

Sam Bird è stato lento durante la fase di pit-stop ed è caduto dal quinto al settimo posto per la DS Virgin Racing, mentre dopo l’applicazione della sua penalità, Vergne è stato classificato all’ottavo. Maro Engel della Venturi ha lottato per gestire la sua energia ma è stato lieto di raccogliere un paio di punti per il suo nono posto, mentre il punto finale è stato assegnato a Oliver Turvey della NextEV NIO. Mitch Evans ha aumentato il suo punteggio nelle corse per il Panasonic Jaguar Racing a quattro, con il bonus per il giro più veloce Visa.

Ora le squadre hanno solo poche ore per ricongiungersi prima di tornare all’aeroporto di Tempelhof domani mattina e correre nuovamente per il round otto del FIA Formula E Championship 2016/17.

Il ritmo delle vetture Mahindra la segna come squadra da battere, quindi sarà affascinante vedere quanto i loro rivali saranno in grado di migliorare durante la notte.

Red hot Rosenqvist hands Mahindra first win

Berlin, Germany. June 10, 2017. Felix Rosenqvist handed Mahindra Racing an emotional first win in front of a full house of fans at the revised Tempelhofring circuit.

Following the closest-ever qualifying session in the history of the FIA Formula E Championship, Rosenqvist started from third. He moved up to second when Jose Maria Lopez made a slow start, before gradually reeling in early leader Lucas di Grassi.

Earlier in the day di Grassi had taken the Julius Baer pole position by the closest possible margin, out-pacing Lopez by just 0.001s, while Rosenqvist in third was only 0.083s off pole.

The ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport driver was struggling to manage the temperature of the battery during the race, which as a result was making braking and regen harder and harder. Eventually Rosenqvist was close enough to pull off a move, driving around the Brazilian through the long Turn 1.

He almost lost the position when he made a small error into Turn 9 on his in-lap before the mandatory car swap, but he re-joined in front and pulled away to establish a comfortable lead and take a win that delighted the team, after a wait of 28 races.

“It feels incredible,” he said. “From the start of the day the car felt good, quick and consistent. I made a small error in Super Pole qualifying, otherwise we could have been on pole. We came here much more prepared [than when I was on pole in Marrakesh] and it’s a great compliment to the team. We have some fantastic people – I was waiting for this and finally it came.”

After failing to score last time out in Paris, di Grassi needed a big score this weekend. However, after the morning practice sessions he wasn’t too optimistic about his chances, but a stunning effort in qualifying not only earned him pole by the slenderest of possible margins, but three additional bonus points too.

Once Rosenqvist had established his lead over di Grassi, he knew the game was up and shifted his focus to ensuring he stayed ahead of Nick Heidfeld in third and gave the German fans who packed the grandstands plenty to cheer. With the post-race disqualification of championship-leader Sebastien Buemi due to his tyres being under pressure, di Grassi has now reduced the deficit in the title fight to just 22 points.

Di Grassi said: “Our car was not very good, we started the morning completely lost and then tried to make small set-up changes and I luckily did a very, very good lap in qualifying. If you look at the pure pace from the morning – this was not the best race for us, so I tried to hang on as much as I could. At the end of the first stint I started to lose the regen because of the battery temperature being too high and the same in the second stint too.”

For the third race in a row the second Mahindra driver, Nick Heidfeld, stood on the bottom step of the podium. Once again, he made a great start to move up the order, but in his first car he was struggling for pace, and rather than challenge the cars ahead he was fighting to keep away from the pack behind. Following the car swap his pace improved and in the closing stages he reduced the gap to di Grassi to just over a second, but at no point was he ever close enough to attempt a move.

Heidfeld said: “This is a really outstanding result for the team considering where we have come from. In the first car, I was struggling but in the second car I started to catch Lucas a little bit. For a while I thought it might be possible [to catch him] but in the end it wasn’t.”

Lopez ran a relatively lonely race in fourth, but was pleased to continue his recent strong form and add to his points tally. Following his team-mate’s disqualification and Jean-Eric Vergne picking up a five-second time penalty for an unsafe release, Nico Prost maintained his record of scoring in every race this season by taking fifth, while Daniel Abt made an amazing start to gain places off the line, which he converted into a sixth-place finish.

Sam Bird lost out during the pitstop phase, and dropped from fifth to seventh for DS Virgin Racing, while after his penalty was applied Vergne was classified eighth. Venturi’s Maro Engel struggled to manage his energy but was pleased to pick up a couple of points for ninth, while the final point was ultimately awarded to NextEV NIO’s Oliver Turvey. Mitch Evans extended his run of points-scoring races for Panasonic Jaguar Racing to four by nabbing the bonus for the Visa fastest lap.

Now the teams only have a few hours to re-group before returning to Tempelhof Airport tomorrow morning to do it all again for round eight of the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship. The pace of the Mahindra cars mark it out as the team to beat, so it will be fascinating to see how much their rivals are able to improve overnight.
