Parigi, Francia. 23 Aprile 2016. Jean-Eric Vergne, il pilota francese del DS Virgin Racing, supportato da migliaia di fan è stato l’eroe nella sua città natale raggiungendo un secondo posto finale durante la prima gara di Formula E della capitale francese.

La gara di oggi ha visto entrambi i piloti DS Virgin Racing impressionare durante entrambe le sessioni di prove, e poi seguire con prestazioni fantastiche durante le qualifiche, con Sam Bird ad iniziare la gara in pole position e Jean-Eric Vergne in terza posizione. Vergne ha mancato il secondo posto sulla griglia di partenza per uno stretto margine di tempo e mentre la squadra avrebbe preferito partire con entrambe le auto dalla prima fila della griglia, è stata ottenuta una posizione di partenza quasi perfetta per la gara di casa del brand DS Automobiles.

Quando tutte le auto aspettavano sulla griglia di partenza l’accensione di tutte e cinque le luci per la partenza, le aspettative erano alte nel garage DS Virgin Racing, ma purtroppo Bird ha sofferto un significativo slittamento allo scatto, perdendo il vantaggio rispetto di Grassi prima della prima curva.

Vergne ha anche colto l’occasione per passare il suo compagno di squadra con una mossa audace che lo ha lasciato in coda a di Grassi quando le vetture avevano completato il primo giro.

Di Grassi ha esteso lentamente il suo vantaggio nel corso del primo periodo gara mentre Bird e Vergne si sono trovati in una battaglia interna alla squadra per il secondo posto. Entrambi i piloti DS Virgin Racing hanno continuato a girare in strettissima formazione per il resto del primo stint e sono rientrati esattamente nello stesso momento. Bird ha tentato di saltare Vergne quando entrambe le vetture uscite dal garage dopo i loro arresti, portando a trattenere il respiro tra gli ingegneri e meccanici quando sono stati vicini a toccarsi. Per fortuna, non è stato così ed entrambi hanno ripreso da dove avevano lasciato prima di entrare.

Durante la seconda parte di gara Sebastien Buemi lentamente ha iniziato a farsi strada dall’ottava alla quarta posizone, essendo aggressivo quando era alle spalle di Bird sfidandolo per la posizione durante un certo numero di giri. Buemi ha cercato di usare il suo Fanboost per rubare la posizione, ma Bird si è difeso bene, mentre Vergne continuava secondo.

Bird ha tenuto duro fino a sei giri dalla fine, per finalmente soccombere mentre si avvicinava alla prima curva, dove, pur difendendo la sua posizione, si è avventurato fuori traiettoria, frenando troppo tardi e andando dritto. Aver compiuto una manovra spettacolare per ricongiungersi alla pista senza danneggiare la macchina era una piccola consolazione, infatti l’errore è stato sufficiente per il sorpasso di  Buemi, Nicolas Prost e Stephane Sarrazin, lasciandolo in sesta posizione.

Vergne ha continuato in seconda posizione fino al termine della gara, terminata sotto regime di Safety Car dovuto all’incidente che ha coinvolto un doppiato. Il team aveva sperato che la gara si sarebbe riavviata, perchè Vergne ha avuto un Fanboost ed era pronto per l’uso per lottare per la vittoria dopo che tutti le auto si avevano ricompattato sotto la safety car, ma purtroppo l’auto del doppiato non poteva essere tolto in tempo utile da dove era finito.

“Questo è solo un risultato fantastico per la squadra e per DS nella loro gara di casa. Ho avuto una stagione complicata, nella squadra sono stati pazienti con me e ho voluto dare qualcosa indietro oggi. Questo è esattamente quello che ho fatto. Guardando avanti voglio spingere per ulteriori podi e più vittorie, la squadra meritava questo e l’atmosfera qui a Parigi ha reso la giornata ancora migliore. Essere in piedi su quel podio è stato un momento molto importante per me”.

Nonostante rinunciare a quello che doveva essere un posto sul podio, Bird è rimasto contento per il suo compagno di squadra, comprendendo l’importanza di fare bene in una gara di casa con la Londra ePrix all’orizzonte.

“Sono contento per JEV, ha davvero meritato questo. Io ho lottato con lui per questo secondo posto, perché queste sono le corse e questo è quello che facciamo, ma nel complesso si gareggia per la squadra. Ancora una volta abbiamo dimostrato che siamo contendenti e con entrambe le nostre prestazioni oggi mi sento fiducioso in vista di Berlino.”

Il Team Principal Alex Tai ha rafforzato l’importanza del partenariato della squadra con il brand parigino DS aggiungendo:

“DS ha portato un livello di eccellenza tecnica al nostro team e siamo lieti di aver avuto entrambi i piloti a competere per il podio nella maggior parte della gara. Mentre io sono un po’ deluso con il risultato finale dato le posizioni in cui ci siamo qualificati, sono contento per JEV e per DS per aver raggiunto a Parigi questo tipo di risultato. Ci dà a tutti molta fiducia di entrare nel giro tedesco del campionato”.

Yves Bonnefont, CEO di DS Vetture è stato anche entusiasta con la prestazione della squadra DS Virgin Racing.

“Non avremmo potuto chiedere di più. Che fantastico, momento indimenticabile per tutti dietro la squadra di DS Virgin Racing. Sono estremamente orgoglioso di questo risultato, un momento molto soddisfacente per tutti i soggetti coinvolti. Complimenti a entrambi i nostri piloti, due uomini di talento che hanno messo in mostra il talento della squadra nella città dove il nostro marchio è nato. “

La prossima tappa del calendario di Formula E sarà la capitale tedesca, Berlino, il 21 maggio.

DS take home honours in Paris

Paris, France. 23rd April 2016. Jean-Eric Vergne, French driver for DS Virgin Racing, gave fans the hometown hero they wanted as he claimed a 2nd place finish during the French capital’s first ever Formula E race.

Today saw both DS Virgin Racing drivers impress throughout both practice sessions, and then follow it up with fantastic performances during Qualifying, with Sam Bird starting the race in Pole Position and Jean-Eric Vergne starting in P3.  Vergne missed second position on the starting grid by the very narrowest of margins, and whilst the team would have loved to have locked out the front row of the grid, it was left with an almost perfect starting position for the home race of DS Automobiles.

As the cars waited on the grid for all five lights to go out it, expectations were high in the DS Virgin Racing garage, but unfortunately Bird suffered significant wheelspin at the get away, losing the lead to Di Grassi before the first corner.

Vergne also seized the opportunity to pass his teammate with a bold move which left him tailing Di Grassi as the cars completed the first lap.

Di Grassi slowly extended his lead during the first stint as Bird and Vergne found themselves in an intra-team battle for second place. Both DS Virgin Racing drivers continued to lap in very close formation for the remainder of the first stint and pitted at exactly the same time. Bird attempted to jump Vergne as both cars exited the garage after their stops, leading to a sharp inhale of breath amongst the engineers and mechanics as they came close to touching. Fortunately, they didn’t and so picked up where they’d left off prior to coming in.

During the second stint Sebastien Buemi slowly started to make his way up the field from P8 to P4, eventually hooking on to the back of Bird and aggressively challenging him for position over a number of laps. Buemi tried to use his Fanboost to steal the position but Bird defended well, while Vergne continued in second.

Bird held out until six laps to go, finally succumbing as he approached the first corner where, whilst defending his position, he ventured off line for the turn, braking too late and going straight on.  Whilst he pulled off a spectacular donut to rejoin the track without damaging the car, it was little consolation, as the error was enough for Buemi, Nicolas Prost and Stephane Sarrazin to pass, leaving him in P6.

Vergne continued to hold onto second position until the end of the race, which finished under a safety car after a crash involving a backmarker. The team had been hoping that the race would restart, as Vergne had a Fanboost, primed and ready to use to challenge for the win after everyone had bunched up under the safety car, but unfortunately the backmarker’s car couldn’t be cleared in time and second was where he finished.

“This is just a fantastic result for the team and for DS at their home race. I’ve had a complicated season and the team have been patient with me and I wanted to give something back today and that’s exactly what I’ve done. Looking ahead I want to push for more podiums and more wins, the team deserved this and the atmosphere here in Paris has made the day even better. Standing on that podium was a very important moment for me.”

Despite missing out on what should have been a podium finish, Bird remained pleased for his teammate, understanding the importance of doing well at a home race with the London ePrix on the horizon.

“I’m pleased for Jev, he really deserved this. I was challenging him for that second place because this is motor racing and that’s what we do but overall I’m please for the team. Once again we’ve proved we’re contenders and with both our performances today I feel confident ahead of Berlin.”

Team Principal Alex Tai reinforced the importance of the team’s partnership with the Parisian brand DS Automobiles by adding:

“DS have brought a level of engineering excellence to our team and we are pleased to have had both drivers compete for podium positions for the majority of the race. Whilst I’m a little disappointed with the end result given where we qualified, I’m pleased for Jev and for DS that we have come away from Paris with this sort of result. It gives us all a lot of confidence going into the German round of the Championship.”

Yves Bonnefont, CEO of DS Automobiles was also thrilled with the DS Virgin Racing team’s performance.

The next stop on the Formula E calendar will be the German capital, Berlin, on May 21st.
